My mindset:

“Engraving give you no tactical advantage whatsoever.”

Yeah but customizing items and giving them funny names is fun.

Same thing that made people buy nfts because they think they can resell it for even more later or bragging rights that you can spend that much on something functionality worthless

TF2 has much more interesting lore of expensive items. Item qualities, spells, discontinuations, Aussies, all counterstrike has are new lines of skins and gloves

I see skins as pointless.

You should also know that sometimes companies hire actors to cheer for their products or make it seem as if they are genuine customers who are buying something, but in reality they are hired people, or they work for the trader.

If other people see them do it, they might do the same. The people that you see do not have to be genuine people. It could all be an act performed to make you believe that you should also buy that.

Like others have mentioned in previous posts, CS skins are like NFTs or pieces of art. They don't have an intrinsic value nor will it make you better at the game, this is not a pay-to-win game. Having the most expensive AK skin will not make you hit more headshots or help with your spray control. The Skins have absolute zero effect on the game, is it simply cosmetic, just looks.

Why some skins cost such ridiculous amounts is something else. There are a couple of characteristics that influence the cost, things like: rarity, condition, aesthetics, market demand, float. The demand, therefore the price, of a skin can dramatically increase if that skin has some significance to the CS culture, like a player clutching the last round in the majors with a specific gun and skin.

Even if skins don't have an impact on your gameplay, it is still a big part of the game and community especially. I enjoy playing this game, and having some personalized or prized items of my own makes me enjoy it even more. And it doesn't have to be expensive, you can find cheap skins if you know where to look. Its the same things as with Banana (the game) you basically play and sometimes in CS2 gamble to get a skin (think NFT)
These skins (NFT) are worthless in themselves (they are just skins ingame) the worth given is often market dictated, ie. rare items (the rarer the most expenssive) is more expensive then common items.

People then either buy or sell depending on if they think the popularity and price will go up.
The system have lots of bots that analyse, buy, sell, stock up and so forth..
One of the main problems are not the fact there is a market or a skin.. but the gambling aspect, where you put money on playing the "lottery"

Valve is happy ofc, since they have a "cut" on every sale on the market.
