How long does it have to be before grave defiling becomes archaeology
I know it's disrespectful (obviously) to dig up someone's grave, even for scientific purposes, yet archaeologists dig up and tamper with graves of ancient kings and leaders. Is there a hard time threshold when grave defiling becomes archaeology

it's been "archaeology" for hundreds of years now, don't you know about all the mummies being dug up? though i think it's called something else

When UK hush away the natives and claim the land their own. When someone become new owner of the land.
When family lineage or any potential offense isn’t concerning, perhaps few hundred years, or more.
If it has meat on the bones it`s not archaeology.
2 or 3 genertations depending on how influential and powerful the family is.

some powerful families that have existed for very long periods of time would never allow it, as the graves might be empty or contain evidence of the line having been broken and replaced with usurpers at one point.

Here You rent graves for like 30 years. Then You can renew it - or whatever was in there is put into the bin.

Or in short: when there´s nobody around who can make claims, and nowadays there´s not much grave robbery going on, because people aren´t buried with their stuff any more, as people need that stuff others worked for, to say that they have achieved something in life - so people don´t like the idea to flush money down the toilet that much any more when they can make use of it. Grave robbery is called inheritance nowadays, and done before the people are buried to save taxes...
It's ignoring ancient funerary rites and grave robbing, let the dead rest but a lot of archaeologists probably consider what they do as preserving before illicit grave robbers dig up bodies to get to artifacts they can sell on the black market.

I don't think there is a statue of limitations unless it's clearly marked as a grave site under modern terms.

Edit: statute
As soon as no one cares. This probably different in each culture.

Paris catacomb is like, 200-300 years and now it's a tourist attraction. So much peace for the dead.

That just means you don't have to bring a packed lunch to the dig.
when nobody is alive who remembers or cares for those graves...

graves are not for those burried there.. but for those remembering those burried there..
as long as there is a group alive for who those graves have meaning.. either cause they knew those people or cause they are forfathers of their tribe...
those graves should be left alone.

so basicly when nodbody alive cares you dig there.. it's free game.
