The point of freedom of speech is to speak freely without the threat of being silenced, these days you don't have to be belligerent just to get banned, you can just simply have a non-conforming opinion. Even then we shouldn't silence people just because someone else got offended by someone else's post. It's also not just on the internet, many western countries aren't really a place of free speech if you can arrested for posting edgy memes under "hate speech" laws.

Any sort of freedom has limits. This is what the law is about. The same applies to speech. There have to be limits. Laws if you will. This is to stop people insulting each other and or expressing opinions that are highly offensive or just downright lies or untruths.
I know it's very difficult to define those "laws" and for sure some places get it wrong, but I don't believe that's reason to just give up and allow anyone to say anything they please without consequence.

Freedom of speech is defined to say anything you like as long as you don't make direct violent threats. For example, you can't say something along the lines of "I'm going to kill you" or "I'm going to kill the US president tommorow." In the US, defamation is also not free speech but I do wonder if there's a possibility this could be used to silence those who speak the truth, for example fabricating evidence towards the accused to make them legally guilty.

The point is being offensive is free speech as long as you're not advocating direct violence, and being offensive is subjective since a statement can offend someone while not offend the other. It's sad we live in a world where people either don't understand free speech or don't respect it at all.

The thing is, though, that nobody has to provide a platform or soap box to others. It's perfectly acceptable within "freedom of speech" to direct people elsewhere or not want it on your own property.

Cause "freedom of speech" does not imply "freedom of consequence".

That's probably why they made the excuse in the first place. They felt confident it would fail.

They're very manipulative-minded, and 20 years later that failure hasn't really happened yet. And they have no clear plan besides waiting and waiting.

Almost any 'active' party, no matter how ridiculous their polices are, would have more draw for the average person who actually wants to fix things.
