As a Japanese, I don't recommend trying sushi if you wanted to live healthy.
Sushi uses raw fillets which may cause food poisoning easier than cooked foods. There are also a lot of dangerous bacterium in seafood which would cause rare diseases, meaning the victims have higher chance of fatal situation.
Not only sushi, every raw foods which are serving in Japan, aren't safe to eat. Because of that, always eat well-cooked foods for your healthy.
If the sushis smells there might be a problem tho'....
"We are deeply offended you ordered something we put in the effort to learn to make and decided to put on the menu. We would rather you not pay our restaurant for your patronage and have you go to K.F.C. instead, thank you very much! Thank you for understanding that traditional Japanese cuisine consists of only one dish! What about Chicken Yakitori[www.allrecipes.com]? What is that? I've never even heard of it!"
>_>
Why do you want to fit in so bad is the question you should ask yourself, be who you are, the person who is disgusted about eating raw fish... you're not the only one
It’s quite easy
As for the smell, it really depends on the place. If they slice the fish right front of you or massively at the back, it could emit fish smell. If not, I'd go other place; It's not normal.
my sushi place does smell to the meat they grill.. and the soysauce and garlic and ginger they use a lot in frying things..
those you will smell..
fish? not.
fresh fish hardly has any smell at all.
And I'd recommend starting with, perhaps, a cooked roll or California roll. Graduate to salmon. Maybe tuna.
Personally, I can't do halibut. It's SUPER fishy.
I can agree with the smell of fish like when you go to a fish market and the place usually stinks, But I've never had a problem with sushi.
Maybe get someone to buy some for you and skip the smell of the place, things like that will take away your appetite.
My only guess is it has been so romanticized in media that people think eating it will make them "fit in" more with or understand the culture better. I know people from Japan though, they don't even eat sushi. They tell me it's mostly foreigners at those restaurants because it's the food that is the most exotic to westerners. It's like a Kardashian, it's famous for being famous.
