NaissanceE is the most atmospheric and immersive game that I have played.

Other honoarable mentions are: Doom 64, Skyrim, Quake 1 mod Arcane dimensions (but it is way too hard for me), by the way also Skyrim mod The forgotten city, Eternal Darkness, Oblivion...

And it dfepends what you mean with "atmospheric", the stage Spagonia (Rooftop run) in Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Generations is very atmospheric and gorgeous, Agony for the Amiga is a very atmospheric shoot em up, Nighta into dreams can be very atmospheric (expecially Spring valley and the Christmas stage)

There are many atmospheric games but NaissanceE for sure is the most fascinating, atmospheric and immersive of them all imo

Other honorable mentions are Ico, No more heroes 2, Persona 4 (never actually finished it I'm not into jrpgs too much but the atmosphere is very good), SMT Lucifer's call (Nocturne in the USA, same as Persona 4 it's a jrpg I never actually finished it), Hand of fate...

The original Thief and Thief 2 games, as well as System Shock 2. Their graphics are a little dated now, but they were kind of spooky and fan at the time.

Another old game was SHOGO Mobile Armor Division. It had a very anime feel to it, but the SP game was too short, and the maps could have been larger ... also there was supposed to be a humans verse mech mode called "squishy mode" because of mechs stomping on humans, but it was a mod that no one used.

Left 4 Dead 2 has a nice southern atmosphere. First Assassins Creed in the animus. Hitman as well, the soundtracks of Blood Money help set the atmosphere.

Pro-tip : those who makes an EXTRA care and shine'n'spit on the sound design. Arx Fatalis and mainly Thief comes to mind, but there are others FPS-y with crunchy sounds.
I absolutely adored the feeling of traversal n the 3 OG stalker games.
Thereare things like vampire the masquerade : bloodlines, or Underrail. Outer Wilds.

And after that, it's a question of personnal preferences. Horror games ? Go on with your opinion. Is FTL more atmospheric than Darkest Dungeon ? Your opinion, again.

My opinion is that NO games from bethesda, EA or ubisoft AC's series has even tried to immerse me. Myst has. Ol'Blizzard Blackthorne has. Japan-superfamicom-only Hagane has. Snes Sim City has me immersed more than any assassins creed :/

Kingdom Come: Deliverance's atmosphere and ambience is unmatchable, in my opinion.

I found the world of Dishonoured and Dishonoured 2 to be immersive, especially when you're doing the non-lethal runs, as you explore, you spend much more time waiting and observing.

My first run in Dishonoured 2 was a No-Powers non-lethal run, and wow, did I see so much environment and how well done the level design was done. Being able to get pretty much all of the collectables and explore the world without needing powers and just being a normal person, it was a really cool and challenging experience.

I like the way animators made Link's sprint. Since then, my favourite game is BotW.

Last game that really sucked me in with atmosphere and imersion was Fallout New Vegas. Mind you i only played it last year game came out 2010 still it managed to wanting to play it over and over again.

Also i would say Call of duty World at War have very thick atmosphere as it really shows horror of war.
