Is college too expensive in America compared to European countries?
I always hear how Europeans "get to go to college for free" and I was curious as to how true this is. As far as I am aware, here in the US college can be more of a luxury for many rather than a right. What is it like in Europe?

Here's the truth about college here in the US... If you do well in school and try hard, college is free here in the US. If you do pretty well, but not great here in the US... college is free here unless your parents make over a threshold of money. And yes, that threshold is pretty low, but it's still MANAGEABLE unless your parents are complete tools and have spent all their money on 3 cars and a huge house. If you are in neither of those buckets and just did alright in school, you can still get college for free if your parents don't make a lot of money, but you'll have to work for it and may have to choose something that's needed to get it. For example, nursing instead of Interpretive Art.

There are many ways to get college for free here in the US. I got mine for free by joining the Army. My employer also pays for my certifications and continued education.

If you didn't do good in school and your parents don't have money... There's always the dreaded JOB, community college for two years, and not moving out of your parents house to go to some school with your friends.

And here's another truth... Many employers don't even care about college anymore. This can be good and bad. It's bad because you'll get paid low. It also drags down the pay of people who did go to college. The good is that you no longer have to take a bunch of general education ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Humanity should be ashamed that education is still not free for everyone.

I'm not saying anybody should be allowed to do years over and over or try a bunch of directions for free but the base, even university should be free as knowledge is key and every child should know it will have the same chances as everybody else.
Children are not offered university degrees unless they're exceptionally talented. So, it's okay if it's not free. Things that aren't required shouldn't be given away for free.

And no, equity is more important than equality. This means giving people what they need to be successful, rather than treating everyone exactly the same. For example, people with disabilities may need more support to thrive, so it's important to provide accommodations and assistance tailored to their needs. If we only focus on equality and give everyone the same opportunities, it can be difficult for those who are struggling to succeed.
This is a very bad example. In the system of equality there still exists the idea that those with learning disabilities or even physical disabilities can have tailored support for their condition. Such an example does not reflect negatively on equality (aka equal opportunity, aka traditional justice ideas) in society.

An actual example would be:

Equality: college admissions requires same standard for entry, regardless of race, income level of guardian(s).

Equity: college admissions will not require testing for admissions for those who are deemed to have come from a subpar school. Reason: they are not likely to do as well on the test, thus preventing them from being admitted and that wouldn't be "fair."

In a situation like the above, but in a Equality system, resources can exist for those who need to increase their proficiency in knowledge for the test to gain admittance, but the requirements to actually be admitted would remain the same, with no one getting special treatment.

Equity creates an imaginary fair field. It does more harm than good by pretending that the subject is just as qualified when they aren't. It allows for a system for some to not work or study as hard as others.

You get what you pay for. Can't think of any movers and shakers of the world coming out of the European university system.

I probably paid a couple of hundred Euros for my education and I got a well paid job out of it. As did all of my friends from back then.
You don't have to become the CEO of an international company to have a successful and fulfilling life, you know...

No, not successful and fulfilling...just to produce important goods and services that change the world. How many of those came out of your country again?

Not true. Maybe unskilled, menial labor jobs, but you need the education and certifications for many important jobs.

And taking the meaningless general classes serve a purpose. How do you know what interests/does not interest you unless you are exposed to it?
