It is more of choose your own path adventure books than a traditional visual novel.
If you want a good VN then read Witch on The Holy Night, its linear and there are no choices in the main story, its also very cinematic and atmospheric and it doesn't have characters staring at me all the time, making it my favorite visual novel period.
I have enjoyed reading through Sunrinder because the characters have had a noticeable development, though, the time shiftings between each prequel to sequel have made it a bit more difficult to relate to that I would've liked.
The big plus for me was its turn-based strategy combat.. Executed and polished in a way most videogames don't have. It's simple, easy to get into, and one doesn't need to play hours of it just to get used to it and understand the basics of how do things work.
What has actually convinced me to play was its theme - I have never seen any turn-based strategy with a space theme. None.
There are no boring parts, besides some within the last sequel.. But that can be easily forgiven as the rest of the story and even better gameplay does more than make up for it.
I could say something similar about other visual novels.. But because you're doing a research, or have decided to call it like that, I do feel less inclined to because you're not asking outta curiosity, but just to get something done.

not sure L.A. Noire fall's into this category, I only completed it a few times
Often not good sound effects, making it dull to call it a "game".
Often don't give you enough choices.
Too obvious or boring story progression.
Not saying all VN games are like that, but majority are, as rhey are low budget.
and for some reaons I like reading books....
