I don't use it because I hardly go outside if not for work, but people with more outdoor activities may consider it.
1 gaming on a tiny screen is crap
2 gaming without keyboard and mouse is crap
3 they can't function truelly as real pc..
if one really wanted to make a device like it.. it would need a totally different layout..
**performance wise.. thats the easy part.. if you accept lower settings / older games not so difficult as all the good games were made before 2005 anyway.. it totally can be done... while using little power.. can even run an win xp emulator on a arm chip if need be..
but to solve the keyboard and screen issue.. you need to do far more..
option 1 real :
-make a foldable screen that can be rolled or pulled out... giving a decent size... of say 21 inch minimal. despite being phone sized when folded up.
-add a foldable keyboard... even without any dept to the keys.. you need large enough keus..
option 2 optical..
**add a projector to the top and bottom.. + a sensor..
that way any flat surface or wall becomes your monitor.. while any flat surface in front has the keys projected on it.. with a sensor that detects where your finger is gooing that can totally work.
option 3 full on vr
**forget a handheld.. but build it into a vr set.. it can have the same specs.. and you can just do augmented reality where you project a screen and keyboard in front of you..
extra for 2/3 you can add some sort of glove or small things you put on your fingertips.. to basicly emulate these keyboardstrokes.. might even build the click into that glove fingertips so it still feels like a real keyboard..
done in one of those 3 things it be truelly a pc but mobile.. and I might be interested in that.. but I never was interested in consoles or handhelds... if I want to do mobile gaming a laptop beats any crappy handheld..
since Valve has their own custom OS that is meant for the deck
similar to the Nintendo switch.
the rest of those handheld PC's are just running
windows which isn't at all designed or optimized for them.
if it aint running windows.. it is useless.. and not a pc.
99% of your steam library won't even run on the thing..
get a laptop instead if you want to game mobile..
say you build an arm-based laptop.. with a foldable screen..
say a 21 inch monitor but cut in 3.. so the 2 sides fold out...
meaning it is as high as a 21 inch monitor and only 1/3d as wide..
it's keyboard covers the full top side..
a mouse could be added via usb..
make it thick say 3cm thick so it can have quite the potent battery..
and have it run on an arm based chip.. while running a virual xp, win 98, win 95 and dos simulator.. each will all the great games for those software systems..
20tb storage is easely to add given how thin m.2 are...
something like that would be nice to have.. a true retro pc running real windows.. playing real windows games.. and more mobile and with longer battery life than a laptop.
but such devices not excist.
Valve provided an official disassembly video, which is more than most other companies are willing to do.

And they provided official 3D printer files for people who want a N64-style transparent plastic shell or replacement analog stick assembly.
This sort of thing needs our support, so go get a Steam Deck or Framework laptop. Down with anti-right-to-repair scum!
I preordered the successor Pyra, but the project seems to have been killed by the Covid pandemic.
So, I can pretty much be anywhere and play my emulated games (like my PS3/PS2/Xbox games) and normal PC games too.
For me compatibility was never an issue, I'm a Linux user anyway so all my games already work on Linux regardless.
Overall? Happy enough with it.
My only problem with electronic devices is that sooner or later they will get broken and also I do not like how nowadays everything must be connected to the internet to work... it feels like the product you buy is never fionished because they continuously get updated... and I know things that do not get update usually ends up being even worse because today everything works this way but I don't like that, I preferred when I was a kid and when you bought something you knew exactly what it was and that it would have been exactly the same as long as it kept functioning well.
But other than that I really like the concept it is cool and for sure the Steam Deck is very appealing to me even if for my lifestyle I do not need a portable device at all, it is just very cool imo. I would change a few things in how devices work nowadays, I really hate the need to be connected to the internet, it should be only a plus imo, not something needed, but I am just way too disappointed by the entire videogaming industry to be injterested.
whats apealing to it?
I always hated consoles and their handheld versions
I get laying lazy in bed and not wanting to go sit on a chair behind a pc.. laying in bed with aa laptop.. totally a thing.
when doing a lanparty.. I prefer just bringing the fulltower pc.. but granted a laptop can easier be brought if you just want to do a quick lan party.. with less planning ahead.. can bring a laptop on my bike.. my pc needs to charter somebody with a car ..
but a laptop does all that fine.. if anything todays laptops have become craap due being made to thin... and to small in screen... I not mind 9kg laptops with much better cooling and 21 inch screens.. we have made a step backwards compared to gaming laptops a decade ago.. when laptops were thicker had better cooling battery and larger screens..
why the heck would you want that smaller.. I have had a 10 inch laptop such a tiny keyboard and screen it is CRAP...
the steam deck.. does not even have proper windows on it..
it has crappy buttons not a keyboard
and it's screen is just way to small
it is a glorified console.. NOT a pc and I HATE consoles..
