I mean, they like art for a reason...

it's the best way to invest actual wealth so it doesn't depreciate.

They also love art as a way of money laundering

Sure sure, everyone believes the piece of art that looks like a blank piece of paper is priceless, sure sure modern art really is so great and amazing, another priceless piece you say that looks like you threw the paint at it? Gotta have it.
Embrace Nasalism. Made famous by Pinkaso.

Was he popular at the time of his death? There's your answer.

if I remember right he was working underpaid for Aladdin with stipulations, one of which being genies role in the movie, and how it was marketed, which disney broke both of those stipulations. however given he re appeared in the third movie and properties after, the differences were settled.

nah, what killed him was I believe some form of dementia, and he went out on his terms, which while sad, is far FAR more understandable.
as I heard it he agreed to the second alladin movie under the condition he wouldn't be used to market the movie... but they went and used his name to market it anyways and so he refused to do the third one and had a feud with that katenbug exec who screwed him... then they like bought him some art or something and he agreed to do another movie.

and idk about you, but I find that blaming some mental condition to be a copout... if someone as loved as robin williams with all the financial resources I'm sure he had couldn't find help I think that speaks more to the failings of the system than to any condition he may have had.

it was the first movie, and second it's a literal degenerative diseases you can do nothing about, he decided to go out on his terms, not letting himself waste away to nothing, what I don't know is if he was starting to feel the effects of it yet or not.

I don't even think he was all that popular by the time he died. Everybody loved him as Genie in Aladdin, and Batty in Fern Gully was a fascinating character too, but who talks about his roles in Robots or Happy Feet? I think the last time he saw widespread approbation was in Good Will Hunting. Flubber was, well, perhaps a bit of a flub, and Bicentenial Man wasn't an especially well respected film either.

In the later half of his career he basically became the actor whose name you'd add to a movie to make them think the movie was better than it was. Now don't get me wrong. It's a huge credit to an actor's talent to get to the point where his name is that trusted in the first place, and I think he was able to at least maintain a steady adherence of loyal viewers even after he hit his peak. Still, I don't even think I've even heard of any of the movies he made after Happy Feet before, with the obvious exception of Happy Feet 2.

Now obviously I'm not going to say he did a bad job in films I never even heard of before now, but also, if those films were significantly popular, I think I would have heard of them by now with a name as big as Robin Williams attached to them, even if not only through osmosis.

Now there's always that chance that he could've made his magnum opus, leading to the Robin Williams reinisance, but barring that, I'd have to likely say no. The man basically stopped being relevant after 1997.

Robin Williams forewent his usual cut for the sake of the children when he accepted the role of Genie in Aladdin, but in exchange he didn't want to be used as a prominent part of the marketing campaign to avoid devaluing his brand. One of his terms was that his character would take no more than 25% of the total poster space.

Disney followed the letter of the law, but not the spirit of it. They made Genie take up as much space as they could, while making the other characters disproportionately small relative to him.

Now granted, Genie is the biggest character in the movie by far, but look at this poster for example[images6.fanpop.com]. His head alone takes up more poster space than Abu and Jasmine combined! I'm not sure if that was the offending poster (probably not), but it gives you an idea of the rift.

Angered by this sneaky betrayal, he refused to reprise the role for Return of Jafar and they hired Dan Castenella (you might know Dan better as Homer J. Simpson), to impersonate him instead.

The Walt Disney corporation and Robin Williams eventually made up for the transgression somehow (I do not remember the details), so he decided to return to the role in Aladdin and the King of Thieves. However, it was Mr. Castenella who played the role from then on in the televised series, probably because of fiduciary reasons.
