Simple reasons I hate skill based matchmaking.
Another sbmm thread. It truly sucks the soul out of online games. Its literally equivalent to participation trophies. Something we also should stop doing to kids. Trophies are garbage pieces of plastic for the most part..(unless its a grammy or something). But they should be given to winners..as people who are SKILLED and GOOD should be considered winners. Not just here congratulations because you showed up. All that does is teach laziness. No preparation or outside hard work..just show up.

The truth is as people who play pvp games there are two types of people. Ones who enjoy the game by getting better and more skillful and others that just wanna play and have fun. Why does sbmm exist? Because the people who just want to have fun want to "not play try hards. Now the point is sbmm does none of this why masking itself as it does. The noobs play noobs and never get better and the good players only play really good players and everytime they log in have to sit in a pool of sweat just to break even. Its a demonic toxic system.

Games should base your skill and "rank" off how well you perform as opposed to the average player. Not the average gamer but the average player of that specific games. Some games have hardcore communities for years and everyone is really good so the average is high...while new games are really low.

Because if you are good at something..you should be rewarded by higher stats and better quality play. Atleast for you..if thats what you are looking for.

So if you are the player who wants to get better daily, dont you want to play people that are good too? and not just people of the same "skill" aka sbmm

Or you are the player who likes to just play....do you want to be catered to only play horrible people? Is that fun to you too? Like if you decide to mess around and play worse,, you will play worse opponents.

What happened to the good old RANDOM lobbies. The key to matchmaking having soul. The noobs outnumber good players 20 to 1 anyway so theres always a chance with random lobbies most players will face someone at their skill or below. The good players will defo have better stats but there should be some balancing to the game so said player cannot win everytime maybe.

Random lobbies were great. Noobs can watch pros snipe people and be amazed or a bunch of noobs can have a blast or maybe two really good teams finally meet there match. With the fact 70% of playerbase is below a decent rank usually, it is totally acceptable for random lobbies. They will balance the game and even noobs will have a chance to win because the odds of good players being in every match is LOW.

The idea that sbmm in place so that "pros dont stomp noobs", believe it or not you can play 50 games and not run into people that wildly outside the skill level. Secondly instead of sbmm why not just break it up into three chunks. Top 33 mid 33 and bottom 33. Three ranks to stop pros from wrecking everyone and yet only 3 so that way its fun and random!

Last thing to say is as someone who is usually a really good player..it gets old having the same k/d and w/l as someone 10x below my skill level. Theres nothing fun about being really good at a game just to be fed someone as good as me every single time and die for every kill. There is zero reward for being good at a game then. Because someone who is way less skilled has the same exact experience if not better because when youre not that good theres MUCH more room for error. Im at the point now where on fortnite if I miss a shot ill lose every fight.

I play pvp to relax and be slightly better than most people. Thats what I enjoy. I shouldnt have to sweat every single death. Or be forced to die as much as kill.

Just like old times anyway...even when being better I would constantly get challenged by people. So being random anyway most noobs can benefit from various skilled teammates.

If you cant agree and you think I just want to stomp noobs you dont even know how random lobbies worked pre 2014. They were fun amazing and at most good players would have 1.5-2k/d which really isnt that bad. Because more noobs would take the deaths there k/d was .9-1.2 usually which is still really enjoyable for noobs.

If people are okay with being bad then take more deaths than good players. Whats the big deal if you DONT CARE? :)

And if you are really that bad you cant enjoy the game on RANDOM lobbies maybe YOU should get better.

Matchmaking sucks because it isn't skill based. I wish it was. They say it is but it isn't. Rarely will you get competent teammates for more than 1 game. Trust me, I wasted a few years of my life playing MOBAs. In reality it's all rigged to increase player "engagement." This means the game ensures players win around 50% of their games. You win enough to keep you paying, but losing enough that players get addicted chasing wins. This results in good players being forced into losing streaks so they don't win too much (e.g., teamed with lower ranks, low winrates, and griefers) and bad players being gifted OP teammates so they get carried and don't quit.

one should NEVER play ranked TEAM games... only direct 1 v 1
or with a team of friends you personally know.

So everybody else is lazy, because you don't like a challenge?

Damn LOTS of noobs here who love how sbmm caters to them totally ignoring all my points and having their own discussions.

Truth is anyone but noobs dont like sbmm. But if youre a noob you love how it holds your hand.

Honestly at the end of the day. Yes I WANT HIGH STATS YES I WANT TO KILL YOU MORE. That is the POINT of being BETTER than the average player. To be better and enjoy the fact I can kill you more. Noobs and losers.

Do I still go up against good players? ofcourse. nothing is lazy. I just dont want to fight through 99 other people the same skill level to win one game.

Again 1:1 k/d and 1:1 w/l is absolutely stupid. What is the point of even playing? Why keep playing to get better if no matter what you will go 1:1?

^answer this question and you win.

Loads of people make valid counter points to OP's argument

OP: results to ad hominems because butt is hurt

If you just wanted to speak to a wall, don't post.

as a DOTA 2 player i entirely disagree, sbmm makes the game interesting, the games you play should have a ranked queue to separate ambitious players from players like you who just wanna chill
There're no such seperate queues because players do know workarounds, and because some do have experiences while some don't.
One could argue that things will eventually become balanced over time, right? Wrong, because about an equal amount of players leave and join, ensuring the repetition of the entire cycle.. Until the videogame gets abandoned by the developers.

So the premise is "SBMM doesn't let me stomp on noobs to make myself feel better, and therefor it's toxic"?

That doesn't sound like a problem.
Skill based matchmaking sucks because it forces you to sweat every single match if you want to win, and not only is that not fun, it's stressful and exhausting both mentally and physically. Some of us just wanna chill out and have a fun match, not be forced to treat every match like it's some hyper-important competitive game with money on the line. SBMM and Esports in general are a plague upon multiplayer gaming. Anyone claiming that your hate of SBMM is a "Skill issue" should be ignored, as people like that are the reasons why gaming as a whole is going down the sh*tter year after year.

Edit: SBMM is why a game like Dead by Daylight is completely miserable to play, while something like SCP: Secret Laboratory is fun, despite both games being the exact same genre, that being Asymmetrical Horror. One has SBMM (DbD), and one does not (SCP: SL).

Do games not have unranked matches any more?
(honestly curious, I don't actually play pvp games. PvP is a cesspit.)

Not many, pretty much most games that come out these days are constantly trying to prove themselves as the next super epic Esport, and completely giving the middle finger to anyone who just likes to chill and have fun. It's why I personally just stick to TF2 and L4D2, games that while having issues of their own, aren't bogged down by all this SBMM nonsense and were designed with fun in mind.

They do but players ruin it. Since it isn't ranked, the mode is primarily used to "limit test" or downright troll because they got banned from ranked. It's rare you get a normal, fun match in unranked mode. If you're good, or simply have a functioning brain, you'll typically be put with newbies who grief or have no idea what they are doing.

They do tend to have them, but.. You do know how it goes without me having to point it out..

The competitive players head there because playing against the casual playerbase is easy and.. Fun, or so they claim.
I do call that ego boost as that's about all they're acomplishing there while ruining the entire game towards the majority of the playerbase.

As if that wasn't enough, most of the competitive based videogames do also feature hidden elo.
That basically works the same way as SBMM does, but doesn't clearly display your rank, so there's less stress.. Or so they claim, although that's not the truth.

For example..
In Valorant, the only difference between Unrated and Competitive game modes are the visible ranks and how close the ranks of each player are, also called the rank disparity.
So, players do face players of nearly the same rank, but as expected and pointed out, rank does barely ever refer to the player's skill, but the amount of won matches in a row..

Simple solution as stated is to split into three divisions
Noobs
Average
Pros
Separate these people and remove sbmm. Then let random lobbies sort it out.

Other than that if you think good players shouldnt have high k/ds and bad players have low k/ds then your the bot with a low k.d and cant handle being below average. Get off pvp and dont improve because you cant handle being worse than everyone else.

How about we don't do that, if there's one thing worse then having skilled based leagues, its insulting players by calling them noobs. Seriously imagine plastering people with the term noob, you'll never be able to get rid of it, its stuck with you forever because other players said so.

Worst idea I've heard of, if thats how it worked then sports would be decided who was better at the game, not by the score.
