Does NFS Underground 1 and 2 REALLY run on Windows 98SE as specified?

Really now. It actually runs on 98 and it can go as low as a Pentium III? I thought that era of NFS was past that window and well into the XP era possibly 7 era.

They were released in 2003 and 2004, this was still within the support period for Windows 98, which went EOL in 2006

They did. NFS Underground ran on Win11 with no modification.

Underground 1 works for sure on Windows 98SE. I have finished it two years ago on my retro PC which ran Windows 98SE. The computer used an Athlon 64 Socket 754 and a Radeon X800PRO AGP.
I'm playing Underground 2 on Windows XP and I don't remember what I had used back in the days.

I have no idea if it works on Windows 98 and I don't remember my pc's specs from back in the days. My current Win98 machine is too weak to run Underground 2. I might give it a try in the near future and I'll let you know.
Nope, those components have not been bought from Ebay. I've bought them from Ebay's equivalent in the country where I live. Still, I also bought old stuff from Ebay and they were ok. Unfortunately I think that you had bad luck with those old components. But as an advice, I only buy from people that have high rating and whose listings have pictures with the actual part working. Ah, and don't forget that you can always open a claim if the item is not as described by the seller.

OK. So I have an answer for you. I will start with the system specs:
MB: ECS K7VTA3 v.6 (VIA KT333)
CPU: AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1GHz (10*100)
RAM: 512MB
GPU: GeForce3 TI200 using 43.45 driver
Storage: SD->IDE Adapter with a Silicon Power 64GB card
Soundcard: ESS Solo1 (ESS ES1938S)
Optical Drive: LG GSA-4167B
OS: Windows 98SE
DirectX: 9c

On this specs both Underground1 and Underground2 work. It's not a good idea to crank up the resolution or the details, but it's playable@640*480 with low details (not lowest, but below medium).
So, there you have it :). It's a shame that I can't upload some print-screens.

My point being that it's an older game that runs under a more contemporary OS. I'm sorry I was not clearer.

Both are very good games. I played them quite a bit way back when.
