If you imagine forced-perspective of some common 'things' you can end up with something that looks like the famous cardioid shape. Its technically the first naughty logo ever if you think about it.

IIRC, the contemporary symbol we use for "heart" - ♥ - was originally derived from the shape of a garlic pod. Garlic was, and is, that insanely popular and was/is thought to have so very many positive properties that... Well, there ya go.

Though, I could be full of ____.. I'm sure its history is out on google, somewhere. :)
