El Salvador law prohibits presidential re-election (from what I understand)

no it doesnt
"La constitución de El Salvador, establecida en 1983, prohíbe la reelección inmediata de los presidentes. No obstante, en 2021, la Asamblea Legislativa, en su mayoría compuesta por miembros del partido de Bukele, junto con los jueces de la Sala Constitucional, tomaron la polémica decisión de permitir la reelección."

also isnt the president the reason the country is one of the safest in latam now?

Well. (assuming you mean the crackdown on drug cartels)

Aren't a lot of people incarcerated in the US also because of drugs related charges?

And in the Philippines they started killing people over that again, while...

In Europe people like politicians I guess but also maybe common people (maybe not) are debating about legalizing all of these things in order to decriminalize them so that there is less shady business surrounding these or such things but in the US there are already a few cities that basically legalized or decriminalized all of the drugs I think (at least in terms of usage), which...

Isn't ... doesn't look great to be honest but.

To some extent it has to do with personal freedoms or choices regardless of how bad or poor they are, which I do somewhat believe more in than...

What the other countries are doing namely or especially the... ones or one that is killing its citizens over such issues which isn't a great outlook I think.

Still, to quote ChatGPT: this remains a very complex topic. I do not think, even though understanding the problems with gangs at least, that most extreme scenarios or situations are really the best way forward, because these seldom actually solve anything and often are or at least can be in conflict with things like human rights and other civil liberties.

What can be done? Talk. Discussion. Sort of to say: Diplomacy but... that also has the tendency to fall apart although looking at some also very complicated world scenarios of the past it has proved to work, and is maybe the best solution going forward.

Why do I say discussion and diplomacy over brute force approach? Well just empathically imagine there being something or someone that is so overpowered that is basically wiping out whatever, Earth or something or a population and no amount of attempts to talk are proving successful. That isn't great from this perspective, is it?

I can't read that. From what I have read elsewhere though it says that he wasn't allowed a second term. I can neither confirm nor deny as I can't read the entirety of El Salvadorian law in an hour.

Also from what I have read, only one third of the people incarcerated are gang members.

These are not my opinions, this is merely what I have read in various articles. If you are in disagreement please say why so other users may get a better idea of what is happening.

Well why don't you put it in context and help us all out? Or are you just here to criticize and blame me for reading the wrong articles?

So, what is the article in question ? Maybe YOU ll begin with that.

Anyways, there was a huge crackdown on gang members last year. Maybe not all of them are/were in a gang, but THAT could explain the prison population ... maybe ... ? :)

So you don't actually have any evidence to support that what I said was out of context, just your assumptions. Lol. Ok. That huge crackdown on gangs, yes, that is what I was referring to.

You may find I don't generally argue political topics with an agenda and I probably shouldn't have proclaimed him a dictator without knowing the actual law. I took the article as factual and didn't do my research, for that I apologize and I will do better in the future, but I in no way have any stake in this contest so I will rescind the dictator comment, but in actuality those are the words of the article and not my own.

Born yesterday? Why don't you just say what you really mean instead of implying something, that would make sense.

Good, and many thanks. But still, can i has the article in question ? I like listening to every side, there might still be a parcel of general truth to be taken from a particular lie.
