The Fate of Super Mario World?

My Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pass subscription expired last month. For the last month I download all of the emulators Nintendo offers in the pass, and played through a handful of titles to see if I would miss them if I didn't have access to them this year.

When it came to the Super Nintendo, I gravitated towards Super Mario World. I fired up the game and it was as easy as the last time I played it. All of the reflexes were as sharp as before. I thought to myself, I have already beaten this game, it is easy. It is the only Super Mario game I have actually beaten.

I began wondering if Super Mario World would remain popular for years as a masterpiece in the series, because everybody can enjoy it. Or if it will fade away in the wake of Super Mario Maker, and Tetris. Will the old school coin-op Arcade style gameplay that carried over into the original Super Mario Bros. overshadow the home console game?

Will it be taken for granted, and fade into obscurity?

Could there be some time in the far future where nobody knows who Yoshi is? Or could Super Mario World wind up as nothing more than a foot note on some trophy in Smash Bros. 2199?

Agreed. Mario has a long future.

Eventually we may have to consider whether Mario enters the public domain, like we are now figuring out with regards to the case of Steamboat Willie. No doubt Mario will be as immortal as say numerous other things we now take for granted. Many direct comparisons are with Disney, who created their own interpretations of classic characters.

What is possible in that far off future, where Disney has free reign to recreate Mario after the character enters the public domain?

We have super mario world on our 3ds from when the e-shop still worked.

Mario World and Mario Bros 3 were developed together. But because Mario World devs were also learning new hardware, they cut back on a lot of the power ups and other features that Mario 3 had. So compared to Mario 3, Mario World got scaled back and simplified. Yoshi's Island which came closer to the end of the SNES, when the hardware was well known, and also with the aid of a very powerful co-processor destroys Mario World.

He’s survived this long lol. I have faith older games far more obscure than Mario will be remembered for a long time. Some people put in tons of effort to preserve this stuff
