Mens holding hair spray?
I'm trying to grow my hair out and it's gotten too long for me to use gel effectively. Is there a good brand of hairspray that will hold my hair properly? Preferably like a medium hold or anything stronger that's for "surfer boy" hair. Also where can I buy it i go to stores and it seems like everything is either gel or putty

Have you tried wax? It is a substance that creates a more natural look (over gel and spray) and is known for it's thick textures which would compliment the "surfer" style. Spray could work but it will make your hair stiff whereas wax will still give your hair a bounce/sway.

PS.... I didn't even know men or women still used hairspray these day's, you learn something new everyday on these forums. Hope you learn something from these videos OP.

People kept inhaling it so they changed the formulae and it doesn't work so good. '77ish I think, mostly keratine and keratine carriers now, so that would be in line with the shift to a plastics economy.

I can't seem to remember if women's hairspray got changed too.

Either way you might want to gel or wax a mockup so you know what you're going for before you spray it. Want to limit potential inhalation time. Don't want to spend like an hour teasing spraying and sniffing it into a perfect shape, changing your mind halfway through and going for a different style entirely, you wanna achieve a clear goal and get done with it. So you don't inhale as much cancer.

First, try a "pomade" not a "gel." (Pomade would come in a solid, waxy, kind of form. "Axe" made, or had made at one time, a decent one. I have very fine, wavy, hair and will use it, from time to time, in Winter to prevent static from making my hair go crazy...) Hair "wax" might work, too. I'm kind of unsure of the difference, myself. The stuff I've bought is just listed as "pomade" but may actually be a wax, dunno. Here's a write-up:

IMO, "hair spray" is just bad for use with a man's long hair. I had decently long, but thick, hair in the '80's and early '90's. For me, hairspray was a no-go - It just made a sort of.. hard coating/cap on my head. It also didn't allow air-flow, which meant that sweating while using hair-spray ended up causing just a mess of not-worth-it.

I've significantly less hair, these days, so it's not a big issue at all for me. I still occasionally use a light pomade during Winter when the air is dry and can result in my hair dancing around due to static.
I thought hair spray went out in the 90's.

Anything that works for women works just fine for men. A blow dryer (+ wax) is prolly a better investment than hair spray

Time to go back to the "greaser days" and use pomade.
