We 90's kids pretty much grew up on it as it was in all of our cartoons as kids, and all of our series as teens.
The trouble was in finding the middle ground though.
Half of us understood it as just being comedy and not taking it too seriously.
The other half of us took it as being entirely too serious and sort of missed the point or punchline of the comedy.
And these days since everyone is simultaneously easily offended but also aloof on their own quest for power and significance, well, that'd be how you get the SJW types. That'd be the denigration of the ones who didn't get it and took it way too seriously.
