9mm tends to go right through at short range, which is most self-defense situations. so if you avoid hitting any major organs or arteries you're less likely to actually kill someone.

this has been the basis of legal defense precedent in the us. it's legally safer to use 9mm, unless you're using .50BMG to look insane and are pleading insanity and dont have a history of false pleas.
