I do sometimes say it unfortunately. But I don't want to. It's plural.
It can also lead to confusion. Example:
A: "Jim took the keys earlier today."
B: "Where are they now?"
Does B refer to Jim or to the keys? If we are to consider the possibility of singular they, it could be both.
There's a dysphoria, and then there are people who claim that dysphoria to exercise a kink. So there are two completely different groups of people claiming to identify as transgender. Those who really believe it, and some who have an ulterior motive behind it. And some of those ulterior motives is in fact is pretty cringe. Like that guy who won that swimming championship was saying on his social media is that he gets turned on my forcing women in locker rooms to see him naked.
Some people who demand others use specific pronouns, is there a legitimate reason behind that, or is forcing people to say what they want them to say, and feeling that control over others something else entirely?
It's improper English. It doesn't have to be hard to say it, perhaps they just don't want to say it, and that's their right too.
A: "Officer. My wallet was stolen, I saw them running south."
B: "I'm on it, how many were they?"
A: "Just one guy."
B: "You said "them". Was it one guy or multiple?"
A: "Oh just one guy but I don't how what gender they identify as".
This is another example of trying to take an extreme rarity and set a rule based on it. Some cultures believed throwing virgins into a volcano would prevent it from erupting. Should we normalize that practice too because someone, somewhere, once upon a time did it?
This is true for any social freak really. Public shaming for really repulsive behaviors should be a thing.
Lol. This made me think of something which was in the media some time ago. I don't recall exactly but it was about using the correct pronouns when insulting someone, or something like that... basically saying that you should insult people respectfully.
You can do a lot of things without being a complete ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to everyone around you... but some people get off on being a complete ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to everyone around them. Narcissists, control freaks, the typical "Karen" types. Those types do need to be separated from the rest, or else the people who aren't faking it will continue to be lumped in with the actions of those who are. They need to understand that not everybody pretending to be on their side is actually on their side. They're being used by pretty much everybody around them. The fakers, politicians, anti-Christians, big pharma. Pronouns are the least of their problems when you think about it.
idk if it's just me but i think most people would say something more akin to "someone stole my wallet, they went in that direction"
cuz personal pronouns are often used after referring to someone with nouns
