In Super Mario Bros.
When Mario gets a fire flower, he don't get the fire powers but instead he grows to Super Mario. Now, that's weird. It's like the small body of Mario can't support the effects of the fire flower.

Only in 1 and World, I'm pretty sure.

I know it was in 1.

I think power ups and stuff in 1 worked like this:

0 means small Mario
1 means big Mario
2 means Mario has fire power

Both mushrooms and fire flowers just increase the number by 1.

I can't remember, can you get fire power in 1 from a mushroom?

Getting hit by an enemy just sets the number back to 0.

Nope, mushroom just increase it to 1 if you're on 0. This was fixed in 3 and removed in World and refixed in the later platformers.

Guys listen, listen.
If Mario gets a fire flower when he is Small Mario, he will turn into Super Mario. Nothing else.
But in other games it's not like that. For example Super Mario Bros X.
You will get a fire flower as small Mario and turn into small Mario when you get hit by enemies and stuff.

In SMB Classic, there was a glitch where Mario can be small and fiery. If I remember correctly, in a Bowser fight, you have to jump on the axe and Bowser's head at the same time as big Mario. Then the small and big Mario effects are reversed. Small Mario and big Mario will swap sprites and you when you hit a power-up box as small Mario, the game will be fooled into thinking that you are big Mario and will spawn a fire flower. Grab it and Mario will be small, but shoot fireballs. The only caveat is when Mario is small using the glitch, he still cannot smash bricks.
