Steam Deck made me finish Half Life 1
I just would sort of wander away from it on desktop. Now. Now I get it. Matter of fact, I might prefer it over Half Life 2.

I have found the Steam deck has given new life to games I might not have finished before. Feels like less of a commitment, which paradoxically makes me more likely to finish my backlog.

Digging this little pocket pc.

What games has the Steam Deck helped you to click with?

Steam Deck is a PC.

I can't speak for OP, but for me, my Steam Deck has freed me from my desktop. I'm so isolated back in my little office room where my desktop is, cut off from the rest of my family. My Steam Deck lets me play out on the couch, or in bed, or out in the yard. I've finished more JRPGs that I've sat on for years via Steam Deck than I would have otherwise.

Half Life 1 is an awesome experience on Steam Deck running at a locked 90 fps on my OLED with about 8-10 hours of battery life depending on my brightness settings. I use right stick for aiming big movements and gyro for smaller corrections.

you can hardly do any sorts of strafing tricks besides wall or ladder strafing with a stick

Eh, maybe I'm a bit of a boring purist. I'm one of those who wants to experience games the way the developer intended, and I'm not interested in executing any known "tricks" or other little exploits. Even if I know about them, I tend to avoid using them. I also tend to make less than optimal decisions in RPGs if it makes more sense to me for the character I'm playing.

Couldn’t put it any better. My pc is in the office in the back of the house. It is definitely more of a commitment.

“Now I will game.” I mutter to my wife as I trudge to the cave at the back.

Playing shooters on Steam Deck?

I suppose the touch pads are a little better than analog sticks, but that's still kind of weird.

No, you have Gyroscopic control for fine aiming and stick for large movements. Really quite comparable to mouse accuracy.
