I'm thinking about quitting video games cold turkey.
I was thinking about quitting because I just play too much. I looked at my game time on State of Decay 2 and it sits at nearly 700 hours. The thing is I don't play much when I have work, but when I'm off work this is all I do. I'll game for hours upon hours. I am also not happy where I am at, and would like to make a drastic change in life. I don't like my current job. Its a very unrewarding low skill job. I live in a decent apartment, but I'm also alone. I drive a crappy old (2005) Hyundai. Its a clean car though. Reliable. I'd like to go back to SE Asia (Thailand, or Vietnam) and live. There are so many things that I want to do but gaming seems to get in t he way. Oh, I also want to hit the gym hard. Get into the best shape possible.

OTOH, I do love gaming. there is something about being immersed in a game with good graphics, and a good story. The Last of Us on PC was an awesome experience. But, I've tried moderation. It kinda works, but I've noticed that whenever I start to feel stressed I will go back to gaming. Its such a great stress reliever, but the consequence is I am just putting important stuff off until it becomes an issue.

Anyway, what should I do? Do you still play video games? How many hours a day, week do you game? Are you able to moderate your game time, or do you play too much. Have you thought about quitting as well? Have you quit for a period in your life, or all together and did your life vastly improve? I'm just looking for suggestions. Thanks...

Poppycock. I wouldn't trade my '00s Hyundai for any other car on the market.

Cuz unlike all the rest, the thing works and the few repairs we've actually had to get were for a song.
I always balance out life and video games. You have to find that perfect balance. That's why video games are still fun for me. Sure... I don't have a lot of hours than I once had when I was a teen because of life but it's still enjoyable.

I think there is a general feeling that playing video games is bad. I don't think like that. I have no issue with playing. But everyone is different. You clearly feel guilty playing as much as you do, so you should stop.
Well, hitting the gym and try new things like trying croissants in every bakery/coffee place that I went to actually helped melt down my game time. Now I'd play like 2-3 hours a day after workout (I usually hit the gym after work), get sleepy then turn off the PC.

Also there are rules that I always follow:
1. Unless that game keeps me excited, otherwise 2 hours and refund
2. Unless that game is hot new such as BG3, or else always find cheap keys or even borrow acc
3. Only keep a handful of games on PC (around 7-8 games, lower is better), the rest delete and forget; also always turn on setting so you can only see the games you installed
4. Whatever you do or play, 12pm is the time to stop

In order to quit cold turkey you’ll have to also give up drinking, smoking, and sex.

Oh wait, gamers don’t do any of those other things.
It's not about the game.

For example a student who has everything planned. Everyday 8 hours of school. Getting extra Homework from various source. Extra private classes and coaching. Various professionals and teachers guiding him. Truly aim to become an A star student.

Towards the end, he has a shiny collection of pokemon cards, lots of albums, is able to answer you every pokemon related question, but failed his school exams. Why did it happened? Is the school teaching pokemon? Is the time not planned correctly?

Because he has no interest in school stuff.

Similar, people are not where they want to be and they usually blame on what they love for taking up time. It's not true. They are not where they want to be because they lacked that interest in that area.

Life is never that difficult. It is actually really easy. We have lots of time and extra time to pursue on things we truly wanted. There are so many CEOs who play 6 hours of golf. So many school higher flyers who play games everyday. The difference between success and failure is only that little bit of interest.

If time is your enemy, use timers and alarms and adhere to them. Build some discipline and you'll be just fine.
if you leave your pc on when afk steam stil logs all tvose houra most those hours i raked up that way.

if gaming is hindering your true development.. like cleaning your house, cooking heakthy, meeting friends and familt and dating.. than yeah it has become an addition and you best cur it off.

if you just have a lot of time to fill with bo use for it.. and you like gaming more than collevting stamps or birdspotting or watching tv.. it can just be a healthy coping mechanism..

ofcourse the problem is.. that while gaming can help you to stay sane in a to lonely or stressfull life.. it can also prevent you fron improving that lot..

going a week or month a year on a tech-fasting.. no pc tv radio phone or such.. can be healthy..
i have tried living without pc and smartpjpn3 for a year un the 00s..
and even than i found...

it was near impossivle i had to do so much work just to pay rent.. or such.
and today itcwould be imposdoble back than you still had checks and fysucal bank offices and internet cafes to fall back on once a week.. nd we still had landlines than not neeced internet to opetated (truevphonelines notbthe voip phones we have now)

i felt much better libing annalogbut i found its imposiible to live without cant find a job keep a job do a studymm or pay bills or anything without intenerm.
if i had a big rws destroy the internet button i'd press it than the better annolog services would return.. but as things are.. not possible

I think your very much right. It's a huge problem in today's crowd and at least your taking time to be aware of it within your personal lifestyle however it doesn't mean you CAN'T play video games but be careful what you ingest in yourself. So many games these days are dark and gross and we wonder why people have screwed up heads. Those who know little to begin with are affected the worst but often don't realize it till they reach rock bottom.
cold turkey is possible but a real PITA to manage. the reward centers in your brain will be urging you quite strongly to play games again after a short while, sort of tense feeling followed by an extremely strong longing to play and day dreaming about it as well.

you should wean yourself off gradually and make sure you have a suitable replacement that's just as good to give you the same sense of enjoyment and keep your reward centers in your brain satisfied.

why would you want to quit? games are fun

if it's a time problem just play less

I too quit gaming for like 1,5 years for self improvement purposes and slowly picked it up again after life improvements.

Some are simply all or nothing people.
In my eyes it's only worth pursuing stuff when you give full effort.
I only played CS and Rocket League when I wanted to be good and managed to do it :erune:
