Why Christmas?
Why doesn't secular society break away from Christmas?

It's supposed to be a time for everyone, and all are welcome, even though it is a Christian holiday, but I hear the same things every year; "Xmas" this, or "stress" that, or "I hate Christmas", etc. and every year it's worse.

On Steam, non-stop posts criticising the holiday (it isn't the right date, it's a pagan holiday, and on, and on), or posts from people who simply can't seem to grasp the concept of the thing.

Why does one joyous celebration threaten so many people?

And if it does bother you, why are you even bothered by it? Nobody is forcing you to participate.

Christmas should be Christmas. A time to celebrate the birth of Jesus, and all are welcome.

If you want to celebrate Xmas, or have some other meaningless celebration (Festivus, Utopiacornucopia, or call it Universal Fun Day for all I care), then go nuts!

Why can't there be another day for that?

It's already insisted that church be removed from work, school, etc., so why not have your own holiday as well?

Why celebrate a Christian holiday? It makes no sense.

Honestly, no other religion has to put up with this.

I guess that's the price you pay for trying to be inclusive.

The only reason to hate Christmas is that Soviet Union collapsed on December 26th

Maybe they were ditched last Christmas. Everyone had a different story in life.

I mean kids will naturally love holidays and gifts, only adults that were bitten dislike it. : P

We do.
"Have a good holiday, if you celebrate"

If we don't recognize religion, why would we celebrate religion?

I recognize it as a time to catch up with family I've not seen in a while over a good meal.

I understand that. Christmas can be a difficult time of year for many people for a variety of reasons. It would be insensitive not to think so.

It's easy to associate pain with this time of year, but I assure you that the true spirit of Christmas has never been the reason for anybody's suffering.

It can't hurt to make new and happier memories in this time though.

Oh it tried to absorb it with Santa and Snowmen... didn't work, CHRISTmas is still here to stay.

Have a Merry Christmas :steamhappy:

I guess it depends on how you define "force."

I could piss off everyone I know, but that wouldn't be worth it.

Right, but why can't this be on the 23rd or something then? Why the 25th?

I understand it's just easier for everyone that is celebrating to do it on the same day, but if you're celebrating Christmas, celebrate Christmas properly on the 25th.

If you're celebrating "the holidays" with people that don't care about Christmas, do it any day. Have the celebration in August. There's no good holidays during the summer (and technically, it wouldn't be a holiday since that breaks down to mean "holy-day", implying there is some significance to the occasion).

But also, what signifies this as being special or any different from any other get-together during the rest of the year?

Why the 25th?

What significance does this date have to anyone who doesn't actually care about the real reason behind the celebration?

And what is the "proper" way to celebrate Christmas? Are we really gatekeeping holidays now? It's hard for me to tell if your thread is complaining about people complaining about Christmas, or you trying to gatekeep people from celebrating it who aren't strictly Christian.

Here's my idea, if you want to wish people a merry Christmas, then do that. If someone gets offended that easily over it, then just nod your head and move on. Life is too short to get hung up over stuff like this, and it's also too short to worry about how other people celebrate or do x or y thing if it isn't directly impacting you or negatively affecting you.

Because while I may be non religious it doesn't mean the rest of my family is. They still observe it on the day of and plan everyone getting together accordingly.

Why it's a matter of being special is with a large extended family as we have, not everyone is going to take the time and money to make trips from out of state to get together otherwise (outside of a funeral).

So, even if not all of us are religious or actually observe the holiday, the majority of the elders are and do and it's about the only time of the year the majority of us are all able to meet up at once.

Doesn't mean those of us that don't observe it are jerks to those that do in the family. It's just 'hey, big home cooked meal with people I haven't seen in a long time.'
Ah yes lets celebrate the birth of a mentally ill con man whose life caused countless deaths over the past 2000 years.
