shear a gear in an auto and you're screwed tbh.
In theory and in the past, yeah, but today, you don't need to worry about that anymore. In fact, I would be more worried about pretty much everyone here improperly shifting gears which is bad for synchros and the clutch. Look into the ZF 8-speed, that thing is perfect for just about anything and it's bulletproof. I have it and it's really that good.
Imperceptible gear shifts, ridiculously fast in manual mode and sport mode (yet no less smooth), fuel consumption that couldn't be better for the kind of car it is and it's literally always in the optimal gear. I absolutely never felt the need for kickdown, the left paddle or anything and it never ever shifts up or down at the wrong time or place.
It does literally everything exactly the way I would do in a manual transmission, like when I want to accelerate a bit faster only for the sake of getting to the highest gear sooner so that I could coast for fuel economy, it does just that. When I want to accelerate for the sake of acceleration, it does that optimally and I couldn't possibly do it better manually. When I'm going down an insanely steep hill, it goes near redline if it meant preventing the car from accelerating, same with climbing insanely steep hills. When I'm taking a corner, it holds the gear and then holds it if acceleration continues afterwards or upshifts if not. It's absolutely ideal in every possible scenario and it's like it can read my mind. It didn't mess up anything even once, I never found myself in a too low or a too high gear, never had to wait for it to shift up or down in response to my throttle and brake inputs and so on and so on, it always worked flawlessly. Towing, snow, launching with the left foot on the brakes and right foot at certain rpm, everything I can think of is just perfect.
Not a single issue of any kind with the gearbox.
So, like I said, most people are just uninformed, misinformed or stuck in the past with outdated information which, to be fair, most definitely wasn't wrong in the past, but it sure is now.
