Kinda weird how often characters in video games use the name of the currency
when I would find it more natural to say "money."

You know, in games with fake currencies, like Gil or Zenny.

I wonder if maybe that's a Japanese thing, or if it's just the writers thimking it's more immersive than it really is.

I mean, of I'm a bad guy, I'm not gonna grab somebody and say "gimme all your dollars!"

50 money vs 50 dollars
50 money vs 50 euros
50 money vs 50 gils
etc

Gil = scam currency
Zen = inflated currency

How much can I sell for this legendary sword? 1 gil.
How much to upgrade this armor? 500,000 zen.

But... but... it is the currency.

It's to keep up the immersion. It's training you to see the currency as part of the setting's larger system, something you can then adopt into the same mind-set you hold your own native, real, currency, with all its complexity. (That may not be reflected in the game, so it's a value-added tool.)

Every trade system with currency has its own currency... That's the gist of it, at least. So, if the Setting demands a fictitious currency, then it also demands it must be it's own - Fictitious and unique. And, it's going to have to keep reminding you of that else you'll start thinking about ones you're more familiar with.

Just be happy you don't have D&D 1st Ed. "Electrum" and "Brass Bits" to have to explain to players... (I don't know where I got Brass Bits from. Maybe some old campaign I ran.)

My favorite was “gald”, from Tales of Berseria. Like could you be any lazier?

You took the word gold, changed one letter, and yet it’s done in a way that it’s pronounced the same way. So there’s essentially no point in doing it.

You might as well just go Stardew Valley style and abbreviate it to just “g”.

Also this would be funny in the context of the Souls games, since souls are considered both a currency for vendors as well as a resource for leveling your character.

“I went to the bonfire and used my money to level up my intelligence.” Sounds like you got sidetracked and took a college course in Firelink.

We don't do that in our world either. So naturally, I'm not suggesting we do it in universe.

Yeah, they've used Gald all the way back to Phantasia.

An even better (worse) one IMO is Kingdom Hearts' Munny.
