I hate crafting
Does anybody want to try to explain why crafting is appealing to so many people?

I hate picking flowers and picking up sticks. So sick of it.

Because there are numerous ways of crafting lol.

I used to weld and create arts pieces, this was actually fun and I miss it a lot, I wish I could do it again.

Sorry, I meant in video games.

I have nothing against doing arts and crafts.

Ahh, I guess you refer to some survival games ?

I assume most people who find joy in this are too scared to go out into nature and just try it in real life or have never had any contact to true wilderness ?

Some might find some fullfillment in it ?

I usually don't enjoy it either.

On World of Warcraft I spent about £200 on character transfer fees to get every blacksmith recipe in the game. All stuff that I would never make, and nobody else would ever ask me to make. But I still had to get those recipes to "complete" my craft.

Brutal they make you do that to 100% your character.

But that's what I don't get. Crafting items is almost never worth the effort. The worst is when you need to do it to be able to do anything (..No Man's Sky...).

I should elaborate too that it's mostly the constant mindless material gathering that kills my soul more than the actual crafting, but there's also nothing I hate more than getting a rare item and wasting it because I didn't look up a guide.

Do kids these days even know what a stick is?

A stick can be anything: A sword, a wand, a gun, a wooden pirate arm...

Lmao. This is true.

But in video games x10000 sticks = x1 bigger stick.

Depends on the game, i hate crafting in game where i pick up a flower, the video game goes to a unskippable 5 second cut scene that had been shown the 2 millionth times.

If it is quick and simple, i don't mind.

Crafting is my fav.
I'd like to see more realism in crafting, perhaps minigames, realistic crafting stations.
I want to be a fletcher and arrow maker in a medieval game, fetching the right branches from the woods, shaving branches by moving my mouse precisely to shape the arrow, then fitting the arrow tips i traded for or have chiseled some stone heads.

Procedural crafting? Yes please, i would describe my item through a wizard, with settings, or even in an advanced ai generation system which reads my words i type. Modifications performed in a design phase drawing program. Send, print. "You have created a new game asset with outstanding performance! Use higher quality materials for this blueprint next time to improve said stats."

People in game would make it rain credits and I would be a crafting boss.

I don't mind crafting but I dislike when crafting games has survival mechanism where your character has to binge eat all the time to avoid dying.

some games are not survival games , they're buffets simulator with monsters as being the only obstacle between you and the food.

Different games have different crafting mechanics and with different ways to emphasize them or make them useful.

In general, they're outstanding mechanics to give the player a way to develop their own goals and to create "new things" in the game world. Most crafting items allow for interactions in some way that alter/change/improve/modify game mechanics, giving the player a way to empower themselves and providing a nice reward feedback. Crafting is also usually advanced through deeper/more/progressive play, which ties it in with other game mechanics that also have their own benefits.

You don't have to like it, though, so don't play games that have an emphasis on "crafting."

Edit: I like RPG and Survival games that have good crafting mechanics with skill leveling and/or "unlocks" as well as resource production/gathering. But, it must be balanced with the other gameplay. (IOW - It should compliment gameplay and not be too distracting or insistent upon itself for its own sake.)

I enjoy crafting when it has that nice balance between realistic and not too complex.

I just enjoy that sort of thing in games. Wandering around, looking at the environment and doing things like collecting ingredients or crafting items.

Some people craft some really cool creations. It would be a waste for them not to.
