Perhaps I'm mistaken, but I am under the impression that the rule about interruption largely only exists insofar as interrupting a person mid-sentence. A sentence shouldn't be a terribly long thing in a back 'n forth conversation. Sometimes it can be hard, but you might be able to butt your way into the conversation without interrupting a person mid-sentence, at least if it's a back and forth conversation.
Plus, since you're at work, that kind of takes priority, unless they're on break.
In theory...
