Go from point A to point B and don't ♥♥♥♥ it up.
Plus all the pretty views.
I love early fortresses, then they get huge and ♥♥♥♥ starts going wrong and I get sick of it again.
How about a nice game of chess?
TF2 still gives me the warm fuzzies.
The real one, not the dog-s**t, bastardized "Definitive" version.
The real one, not the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, bastardized remake version.

Well it was Heroes and Generals.... now that it's gone... nothing much has replaced it.
The key factor that I see in all the titles I consider to be comfort games is that starting over from the beginning, with a fresh character or fresh save file, is where the game feels the most exciting.
There’s two halves that make this up, in my eyes.
One half of it is consistency: when the “good part” is there from minute one, and lasts the whole way through. If I feel like I have to play through and reach a certain point of a game before the fun actually begins, then that’s not really comforting. Those games are good because they start off enjoyable, and remain so from that point on, potentially becoming even better over time.
And the other half is a satisfying sense of progression over time. My favorite types of games are the ones where you start out small and grow over time. The idea of beginning with nothing and working you way up to the top is the most engaging type of experience, in my opinion. They all have that in some form or another, whether it be your character leveling up and becoming stronger, obtaining resources to build bigger and better structures, exploring the world and defeated greater and greater foes, or whatever else it could be.
I also like having a lot of choice to dictate the direction of my experience, too, which is also a common trait with all those games.
