The first time I encountered it was when visiting the vacation home of a couple who were from "Up North." This was in The Southern US and it wasn't a common custom, there. I didn't remove my shoes because I had just spent seven hours driving and if I had removed my shoes... Well, I didn't want to offend them.
And, they were renovating their property. There was crap everywhere and the carpet was going to be replaced, anyway. I think they took offense that I didn't remove my shoes, but... they didn't come out and politely ask me to, but just looked at me disapprovingly. I'm too old and ticked off at the world to alter my normally respectful behavior just because somebody looked down their nose at me... :)
Heck, i should have scraped my shoes off at their door when leaving... HAH! That'd show 'em.
“Boop! You didn’t take off your shoes. I’m going to have to ask you to take it off.”
If you do wanna wear something then I have comfy panda slippers made of cotton.
