i'd go up to my nephews and wave a potato in front of them saying it's their computers. then i'd take the potato downstairs and put in back in the potato sack with all the other good potatoes.

potato clock

when i was a kid it was a part of every grade school science class.

In the US they used an all-in-one clock that you just plugged into the potato. Starting in the late 50s.

They replaced it with a thermometer for 10 years in the 70s, because it was cheaper and basically the same thing. Read the pamphlet, plug the potato.

Then funding got cut in the 80s, and they couldn't afford the potatoes (the thermometers were all broken by then but they still "worked" for the purpose of the experiment,) and cut the project entirely.

I think in my high school physics course we used an egg? (there's a potential difference between the yolk and white) maybe just one demonstration potato that was too withered to get all the volts it needed for a clock?
