 Why?

Because the Anime writers are not good at writing.

Voice acting industry in Japan is unique.

Not true as a generalized statement. I have been playing Sekiro lately, and Oniwa for example is great in English and actually became a meme because of how it was acted. While the Japanese one is much more tame. Most voices are fine except maybe Kuro, because it was a kid? I guess?
You should watch Japanese dub of Disney cartoons. Those dubs are also terrible, too.

Huh...context would help.

Japanese TV shows dubbed in english often do it terribly, I agree. Though if you want real cringe, try watching the old godzilla films with english dubs...it's definitely a different film at that point.

It's hard to translate a script in general, especially in a way that sounds correct.

But nepotism has become endemic to translation and voice acting in general, moreso translation in Japan and acting in the US.

It's a recipe for disasters all around.

..

Here's my unasked for observation as an amateur anime-hater...

The themes do not translate well to "The West." Unless, of course, one is steeped in anime.. The emotives, those things that signal emotion in an artistic sense, just... don't... work. From a standard Western sort of perspective, a scene doesn't do what it does for the one's steeped in anime or who are from the originating culture.

"I don't get it."

"But, this is where senpai daughter son reaches for the tofu and lusts for femboi, but has no crackers and must blush at schoolgirl cousin-crush and twirl with the panty-shot! IT'S CINEMA!"

"Oh..."

<turns on "Gunsmoke" and screams "'Murica" to cleans his palette>

"But, you don't understand! That was manga! THIS IS ANIME!"

<flashy background, still image of wild-hair boy gritting teeth, hardcut to flashy background, still image of other-wild-hair boy gritting teeth>

"SEE? WHAT A DRAMATIC BATTLE!"

"Oh..."

The "story" might be fine or at least comprehensible, but to really re-write it to be palatable for a standard Western translation would make it.. no longer Anime.

IMO.

PS: No offense to anyone - You can like what you like. But, as a straight up "to translation" thing, it's just very hard to make it work right out of the box.

there are outliers but generally japanese voiceover are better. I guess because they need more VA than live actor so they generate better VA.

You'd have to consume a LOT of Japanese media to make such a claim. Isn't it more a question of what kind of production it is, and therefore the kind of budget they had for voice acting?

as a 1:1 it certainly doesn't no, and both countries are so reticent to encourage cross-linguistic training that the people who can translate rarely do.

I assure you, everyone's language sounds absolutely retarded in everyone else'es mouths by design.

idk english va sounds like they're reading a book while japanese is more like a feeling than a voice, they sound/feel like they're actually playing that character they're voicing.

some english va are just the worst. i've noticed this in naruto dub, they're voicing them as if they were voicing some american cartoon. its so bad. theres no feeling behind it... you know theres no UMPF.

Dubbing and localizations are heresy and should be discontinued outright. Translate it and provide subtitles. That's all you need to do.

That being said, Vic is alright.
