kinda a bit regret moving from console to pc gaming
Used to be PS4 player, I moved to PC (<130W laptop) to reduce power consumption and have some modding fun, but ended up find out it's easier to buy and play AAA titles on console. Launchers and store exclusives are just annoying... I guess I can only watch gameplay videos for ubisoft games since I don't want to buy games with credit card directly on their store. (I use cash for physicals, prepaid/gift card on Steam and PSN)

Majority of triple A games are on Steam though.

first PC game was DOOM3, SimCity 4 rush hour and the first Sims in 2003

Last console I had was the sega genesis 16-bit drive, played desert strike, urban strike, jungle strike on it and Sonic the hedge hog on it

That's the bad thing. You can get some decent free games from EGS store, but I wouldn't buy games on there.

Wait, you telling me you want to be a peasant back on those farms again instead of hanging around with the big boys and girls? okay, your choice OP.

Ubisoft used to have games on amazon and elsewhere you could buy at a massive discount, you get the code from them and then you can redeem the code on ubiconnect.

Why the move anyway? You can easily use both PC/laptop and consoles, it's not mutually exclusive.

yup. keep your options open to both ends. no point limiting yourself like that. plenty of deals to be found on either end, even free games from time to time if you aren't bothered about launchers like EGS.

tribalism sure is fascinating these days. people acting like they can't use both.

whether its moving from console to a pc or moving from a game to another..

do you have to abandon one to get to the another?

the world just gets harder and harder for the game loving AAA players.
Times are hard man, real hard.

the consequence of the AAA deadlock is the complete dissolution of financial support for indies and the skyrocketing of marketing costs.

financial support for the indies, in my opinion its a free market up to the indies to advertise themselves.
I remember the days of the 90s....insert long rant about games back in the day where people had choice and developers could market themselves....

Steam and GOG are the best launchers

in the 90s governments were directly subsidizing games in order to protect studios from foreign powers attempting hostile takeovers.

I'll take your word for it.

There were many games I played in the 90s none of them got funds from the government, couple got tax breaks but that is a us thing and I am not an accountant.

they invested through hardware companies, which the government has a controlling interest in.

government also organized funding rallies, similar to the UK-backed one that financed Disco Elysium for instance.

mostly isn't done anymore, except by the UK.

So thats why a certain game i wont say name of has its company hq based in the UK.

The indies games i am talking of are like MUDs and adom and the very small if not solo dev teams type of games.

Good to know about the hardware.

Those are almost universally free, unless they're built on a pre-existing engine as a mod. Like Dungeonmans was, as an Elona mod, or Unloved as a Doom mod.

There's a small market for launcher-based development for things like Unreal and Source, but those generally lock devs into ecosystems that are the target of brigading and inter-country competition.

So using any of those modern engines is like selling yourself into slavery in the Colesium.

Free to an extent, you could donate money freely or buy items that improved gameplay or get yourself a house / land in that world.
Some Muds required payment beyond a certain time or certain level and those then kept asking for more money in different ways unlike I felt the oens where people could freely donate for things.

Outside of MUDs some developers made there stuff from scratch in the good ol fashioned kind of way ie not using other peoples engines.

-and yeah there were / are a lot o total free Muds too.
