That's the problem, here. This isn't a "casting choice." Read the quote. That's Pinkett Smith's words telling the reader what this "docu-drama" that focuses on the "captivating lives of queens who were likely not part of their Western academic curriculum." (quote from above) Yeah, i guess "Western curriculum" just ignored "Cleopatra." Anyone in the West not learn about Cleopatra? Anyone?
Or, rather, does she want to say Western curriculum teaches that Cleopatra wasn't black, which she does not agree with... since someone's grandmother once told them that history was wrong and Cleopatra was actually black?
It's not about fear, it's just about being legitimately truthful. Truth. That's it, because not re-writing history is considered to be "a good thing to do." At least Egypt thinks so...
She could have focused on lots of interesting leaders, but she chose this one in particular because Cleopatra was so very widely known. And, then she spray-painted her story in order to make it say what she wanted it to say, cloaked in "docu-drama," but in a documentary series supposedly worthy of, but ignored by, "Western curriculum."
Yeah, he pretty much proved my point that the people defending Netflix now are the same people who pretended to stand against western cultural appropriation just 6 months ago. It just shows their values shift with the narrative. These are people who don't think critically, so they just do what they're told and their opinions shift with what is most convenient at that moment. Abandoning one belief the second a different one becomes more convenient.
