Law for digital ownership?
We don't actually own our digital games. That's the issue with digital goods. Some kind of law needs to be made for digital products. Sony and Nintendo have already proven that digital goods can be taken away from us. If a law was to be made, what would you want it to look like?

i think it needs a law defientely as a proof of ownership, if a platform censor stuff we still need some proof ie a receipt of owning a product that we are legally allowed to keep it in digital form on our pc or elsewhere even if the platform decides to take it away from us.

Just buy stuffs, then find way to keep them yourself.
As long as you don't share the modded files, you are safe from lawsuits.

We shouldn't have to do that. Once you purchase a something, you should be able to replay, watch or listen to it forever if you wish to do so. And gamer should be in 100% agreement with this statement.

For example.... what if valve went bust one day and closed up shop ? if this was to happen we would lose access to all our games and content we have purchase. I know valve once stated they would release a patch but would 3rd parties developers even agree to this, I think not.

This is why when I purchase digital stuff now, I see it as basically renting.

It's just me and my thoughts on this matter.

I do it, "just in case" though. Buy a game then make a copy version of it, to backup just in case Valve goes bankrupt. I still play it on Steam to earn achievements.

i think if platform censor it can still provide a download link if its a movie or other file that can serve as alternative. if they themselves choose not to sereve the files anymore.

They're going the same way with movies, some day everything you watch will be in a cloud somewhere and when THEY decide, your entire movie collection will be gone

I agree... but platform holders would fight this in the court system for years and even decades if it came to this. I guarantee this. The likes of valve, sony, microsoft etc would stand and fight something like this tooth and nail and in the end, we gamer's would only end up paying more.

yeah pretty weird, because piracy is allowed when it comes to personal files of its users but as soon as it is companies files its a no no.
I knew the writing was on the wall when Steam first came into existence, it is why I refused to use it as long as I could, until it was use it or no longer be able to play new games. I watched as the consoles followed the trend as well. It is pretty well settled at this point, things will be digital, now it is just a matter of seeing how much you digital purchases really last.

This is good for blockchain™
If steam shut down tomorrow. Most of my games would work after a 30 second google search.

That each of us would be in itself a company.
And that company would own rights and that we could negotiate with an AI on the terms of what we felt fair / good business.
This would be for a fixed term and then renegotiation would be done at the end of that time period.
Over all of us coming under the term 'consumer' and bundles together.

For games, you can make one copy to use as a digital backup, but can only have that one licensed game installed at a time. However, I don't know that publishers must make the process easy to actually use that backup copy. (registration/authentication)

This should apply to all digital media. But... it doesn't:

https://www.copyright.gov/help/faq/faq-digital.html

[iYou are not permitted under section 117 to make a backup copy of other material on a computer's hard drive, such as other copyrighted works that have been downloaded (e.g., music, films).[/i]

><

What the streamers sell customers is access, not a copy.

Playstation and Discovery, since they can not agree about how much money they're going to abuse customers for, should be forced to pay restitution for removing access to the media that Playstation customers have previously purchased access for...

I'm sure there are limitations in the fifty-elventy-hundred-page TOS/EULA customers had to digitally sign and sacrifice their neighbor's cat to in order to gain access to Discovery's wide variety of quality programming, like "Rotted Sausage Donkey Challenge" and "The Kardashians:The "Lost in Wallmart" Festivus Special."

But, somewhere, somehow, this crap has to stop - Companies do not own customers and are not free to abuse them just because the customer purchased a product.

People have championed digital distribution for years now and know no better. I no longer believe in digital distribution and yearn for physical media again to take control of my entertainment again. Younger gamer's don't even know a time when we could trade-in, lead or simply sell our games. We are all warped on digital and convenience, we are prepared to throw away our rights to the highest bidder.
What form is this physical media going to take, in a world of games being multpile 100s of GB in size? Discs are slow af compared to just downloading.
