Non-biodegradable mylar ones are bad for the environment. but they're boring and not real balloons. Though obviously, letting any sort of balloon go is a terrible waste.

I'd really like to live to see the day when fusion power generation is a thing and it generates free helium as a byproduct, which isn't immediately redirected to the tokamak cooling systems or whatever.

Also, weather balloons are the softest, most huggable kind of balloon you can get, and it's heartbreaking how many are sacrificed each day for forecasts.

But then again, it could be said that it's because helium is rare and precious, that a 16-18 inch Cattex heart balloon would be a much more meaningful gift than flowers or chocolates. With Hifloat, of course.
