Why do innocent people ask for a lawyer?
If you're innocent and asking for a lawyer, that means you're admitting to guilt or at least that you're hiding something crucial.

It can also mean the police are trying to force information out of you that isn't true (which will then be used against you, innocent or not).

If you don't know how to handle yourself, lawyer up.
Uh, depends on what jurisdiction you're talking about, I guess.

It is to protect the person from the state and any bad practices that may go on to try and put them in trouble.
Plus the Lawyer is a representation of sound mind and can assist the person who might be troubled by the events taking place.
Without a lawyer a person can be manipulated much easier.

Those day when you think the legal system exists for the little guy. The same days when you think company HR departments exist for the worker rather than to protect the company.

No. It's to protect you from incriminating yourself. The police is never on your side.

Even police officers say to ask for a lawyer if you're innocent.

I was on workers compensation and was told I would never work again and to get a lawyer since the insurance companies will screw you any way they can if you don't.

It isn't always about the police. It could even be a dispute with a neighbor that is unreasonable and you need to take to court to resolve something.

Having someone who understands the law on your side is of immense value in court since lawyers basically play "who is the better liar" game in front of a judge. A judge will always believe a lawyer over someone who chooses to represent themselves unless it is beyond obvious in which case it shouldn't be in court to begin with.

That is 220% not true. This has been known for a long time

It starts a little too slow but get very important to know. Do NOT trust the police. Ever:

Do you even have enough knowledge to prove you are innocent?

Wel, it isn't even an yes or no question. When you were arrested, you had been seen guilty, and nobody wants to listen to a criminal's explanation. That's why even you have done nothing, you still need a lawyer to defend your opinion during the court.

In a court of law in the United States, you have to have a lawyer even if your innocent, if you refuse to get one then the court will automatically assign one to you, so realistically even if you don't call for one, you'll get one while in court either way.

That is not how it works. One is appointed if you can't afford one. You can still chose to represent yourself but it's a bad move to make.

edit add - unless the military picks you up then you don't even have a right to trial and can be made into a missing person

The prosecution doesn't care and wants to win regardless if you're innocent or not, so you need a lawyer to defend yourself even moreso if you are innocent.
