both cats I grew up with as a kid lived way longer than that.
18 year and 21 year.
both dying from old age.
and they could walk out and in whenever they want from our terranced house.
like I stated.. if it's unsafe for your cat to go outside.. or if you live in an apartment so it is not practically possible to let the cat go outside
you should not own a cat.
If he did he'd realized what a stupid question that is.
You don't keep your cat from doing anything!

i also had my right arm infected by a scratch from one of them, not fun but it's a reality when you live with kitties.
our cats usually walked with their tails slightly down.. not straight up.
andd they usually were outsight fighting outher cats and dogs (yes the neighbour asked if we could keep the cats inside, his dog (a golden retriever) did not dare to go outside due our cats)
the cats also walked into another cats house and calmly ate THEIR food.. ignoring the hissing cat living in that house...
after a day of being bosses... they would come.. and sleep near you..
the black cat was my favorite.. he did always seek contact.. but he did sometimes scratch.. if you harmed him or did not lisen.
the black cat mewed once as a warning.. if he wanted to be freed from your holding him/was done with you petting him, than you either lisened or the next hit was full out scredder.
-> he also could give a hit when you did hit a spot where he had a wound.. from all his fighting..
*** but he rarely scratched me.. things like removing a broken off catnail in his head (from all the fighting) he did trust me to do.. not others...
others were more affraid of our black cat.. I liked him.. he just had boundries, but he loved compagny.
even when he was very old, and blind and barely ate anymore.. and only slept all day... when I visted my parents house, held my hand near him and he smelled me, he mewed and licked.. that cat really liked me more than all the others in house

was also a very sweet cat.. would tick softly with his paw on the glass window as a sign he wanted to let in.. could wait hours in the rain without giving a sound... as agressive he was against other cats and dogs, as gentle he was against humans.. (save the odd scratch)
the other cat was a smaller ginger one.. that one was different.. he would never scratch.. but he hated any human attention.. he would only come near you if you had food and often stole it (litterly stole the cheese out of your sandwitch once... and ran off with it.)
he did not want to be in your lab, he not wanted to be petted.. he wanted to go out when he wanted and in when he wanted and fed when he wanted and BOY would he make noise if he did not get his way.
-> he was far less heroic than the black cat.. and I liked him far less..
originally the black cat and him wages war.. as the red one was the younger nephew of the black one (1 year difference).. and the red one stupidly hissed at the black cat who would have non of that in HIS house.
**the made peace however when they discovered 2 cats (1 from each side) attacking dogs was far more effective than the black cat fighting dogs head on... and thus the red cat was tolerated by the black one for battles against the meanest dogs;)
90% of day and night the cats were out.. not in the house no idea where they were.. fighting, stealing etc..
the remainign 10% they came home to eat, and sleep.. and were very calm..

the black one liked to sleep near us.. even if he lay on the headend.. his paw would drop down.. to touch you.. he always did try to have some fysical contact with us.
the red one just slept in a corner.. and wished to be left alone.
no such issue with dogs... cats just all pissy.
Not my desktop, or my counters.
Tables are okay though. We feed the older cat on the table (which we never use), and another table the younger cat jumps up for his brushins, and lays and looks out the window.
Every bed, chair, and love seat is also fair game.
But the desk? They both know it's not theirs, and respect that.
a friend has the same. all cats hiss @ him but doggos are all fine with him, idek how that works. doggos bark @ me sometimes but they can also lick my face from the 1st time lol
cats just attack.
edit: most dogs anyways... some are just crazy and/or raised poorly... like notice how most of the "dog attacks" in the news in recent years are smol timidit women with massive danes and such? they obviously got that dog to "protect them" and so it was trained to attack anything that approaches...
dogs are more different... and more interesting... and I'd contest have more potential than cats.
