Probably not. Everyone got their news from newspapers and TV, and there was no real outside voices or anything resembling dissent outside cranks on cable access and AM radio.

Covid happened back in 1918...

It was called the Spanish Flu then and the first time humans learnt an epidemic should be controlled to avoid flooding the hospitals. They had learnt to wear masks, social distance, and do basic hygiene, while buying time needed to develop a vaccine.

They even had anti-mask protesters, known as "The Mask Slackers". They had anti-vax groups as well.
