I don't believe in sleep paralysis, it's just an excuse for lazy people to sleep in.

i've had sleep paralysis a few times, you're awake but you can't move, it is the worst feeling, luckily it only lasted less than a minute

Had it once as a kid, I always wondered what caused it. I think it might of been do to the I slept, but it could of been anything.

It certainly is freaky. Fortunately, it's only really happened once to me.

I woke up and found that I could not move my body. My eyes worked, I wasn't suffocating, etc. so I know things were working... just none of the stuff I wanted to use. There was also a sense of impending danger (with no demons or anything).

All I could manage was a kind of whining sound which our cat noticed. That cat got my girlfriend's attention, and when she came and touched my arm, I snapped right out of the mysterious paralysis.

Is that demon a hot succubus?

It's not as freaky if you are aware that that is what is going on. I've had it happen several times, and know what is going on almost immediately. You can snap out of it by closing your eyes and attempting to wiggle your body.

You can't move. You can't breathe. You can't cry for help.

We briefly experience the living hell that is locked-in syndrome.

^-- This.

I've only ever had it a few times and only when I've been exhausted or when I've been under a lot of stress.

I had one instance of that and I made a "hnngghh" sound and control returned quickly. :)

It's not necessarily uncommon. But, if one experiences it frequently, especially if it starts to effect regular sleep or becomes anxiety inducing, it's a good idea to talk to a doc/neurologist to get it checked out.

https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/21974-sleep-paralysis

'Splained - The body shuts off voluntary motor control as part of the natural sleep process to keep you from trying to run that marathon in your dream, in your bed. "Something happens" and the brain's timing is thrown out of whack, cutting that off too soon or for too long upon falling asleep or waking up, respectively. Is not usually fun...

Used to think the same thing but I had something rather similar for the first time.
I had a dream where I was lying in my bed in my bedroom with the same exact layout as in real life. Nothing any different than when I went to bed. The weather was slightly bad in real life that day but I all of a sudden I dreamt the weather slowly got worse and worse and picked up with wind and rain getting slowly stronger and hitting the window and I think with the circumstances of real life stress and tiredness I was having at the time I began to imagine a really dark shady figure behind me. That caused chills and fear and eventually I ended up not being able to move simply out of fear of not wanting to know if their was something behind me and facing it. And with the dreaming the weather getting worse it made it more scary. Since the layout of the room was the same too it seemed real. I couldn’t move for a while and I strictly remember everything from that dream.

It makes me wonder 2 things:

Are they brought on by things such as exhaustion and stress causing the brain to run wild?

And are they actually real not being able to move in real life or is it just such a realistic dream you’re dreaming you can’t move in the dream but are actually still asleep.

What I believe is that it happens when your stressed or tired and enter a state where your awake but your brain is still half asleep and dreaming which causes you to not have as much or any control of your body yet but still makes your dreams very vivid like it’s real life. Kinda like say dreaming.
