In general though if your "significant other" has been dropping hints go with that first.

Nothing, I don't buy gifts for Christmas; It's all about getting together as a family for me.
Gifts would've only proven to be a distraction, and I don't swing that way. It's about trust, honesty, and all sorts of stuff for me rather than about buying off one's attention and trust with gifts.
