But there are a gazillion positions that are active and don't give you downtime. Most of them, however, are not desirable.

You have to have a passion to become a police officer or a fire fighter. Not saying you can't enjoy what you do but it's more of a passion, duty to the community, and selflessness.

Reminds me of a news story of a police officer arresting a firefighter because he wouldn't move his truck from the 4 lane highway (the truck was blocking 2 lanes but leaving the other 2 lanes open). Reason why is to protect EMS from the oncoming traffic.

Sadly the police officer got butthurt that the captain wouldn't move his firetruck, thus arresting him. Happily for the firefighter he actually got a settlement. Haha.
