when i was a moderator I
-was obligated to read every post as it was made... we even had shifts for that.. it was forbidden to take any action against a post that was more than 5 minutes old.
-we were not allowed to remove entire posts.. we had to snip out the offensive line and alter it (if it was a simple one word change).. or if longer send it to the user with comment so they could alter and repost it themselves.
**this helped users to properly grasp WHY we altered their posts.. and helped guide them in better behavior.
-was free to set the punishment myself, so I could insert in minutes, hours, days, weeks, months the lenght of the ban.. or select permban.
this allowed me to give a punishment for the offense right now.. we had no record nor cared for a persons past offenses.. that idea of repeated offenders get a higher punishment is WRONG to my version of the law.
-the bans if given were also to nudge users back into order.. AS THEY WERE TYPING.. you know when a room full of pubecent users there can be one that pushes things just a tad to far.
the first action than was a kick. basicly a forced logout from steam.. no ban. or a 5 minute ban..
either of those served in 99.99% of cases.. the user got the message and fell back in line.
->
in the rare case a otherwise constructive user trew a tantrum.. I might give a ban of an hour.. by than they usually have chilled down.
in an average 8 hour shift I had well over 5000 posts to read. and I did.
I had about 5 such shifts a week.
-> permbanns I ONLY gave to bots.. and trolls (you know the ones that post one porno link after the other... or who keep spamming buy gold now links)
One NEVER permbans a user..
-> In years of moderation I have handed out a 1 month ban 3 times.
-> a 1 or 2 week ban perhaps two dosin times
an 2 or 3 day ban perhaps 50 times
an 12 hour or 1 day ban perhaps 200 times
an 1, 3 or 6 hour ban perhaps 200 times
an 15 or 30 minute ban likely 1000 times
a 5 or 10 minute ban countless times
a kick without ban countless times.
-our performance as moderators was overseen by a paid GM.. we were NOT to spoil the experience for users..
**each ban that was longer than 1 hour.. would be revieuwed by him.. and if we handed out more than 3 of those bans per week.. to actual users.. we would be removed as mods
our job was not "keep every bit of dirt out"
it was keep the enviroment nice for users...
we did not HAVE to point to rules.. as when you started to cross them.. you would get a kick or 5 minute ban.. and knew ok.. time to chill down.
not be hit with a month ban from nothing...
that serves no use.. to ban a user a day after they made a post.. for a month as steam does..
Community bans can be forever, and also cut you off a lot of stuff. You can't use forums, you can't add friends, you can't communicate with anyone who isn't already a friend, and your profile is forced private and can't be edited.
it is back from another one.
every time its 1-3 days of posting and than the many people reporting every post I make get one that supposingly contains a few nono words and than I'm banned another month.
it makes no sense..
here crossing red light : 26 euro fine
crossing red light 10x : 10x26 euro fine.
steam
1st offense : warning
2d offense : warning
3d offense : warning
4th offense : 1 day ban
5th offense : 3 day ban
6th offense : 7 day ban
7th offense : 14 day ban
8thoffense : 30 day ban
every offense after : 30 day ban
no amount of time in good behavior will lower this back down.
nor is the punishment related to the severity of what you have done.
so a first offense murderer gets a warning but a 8th time jaywalker or something small lime that gets a month in jail.
nor does it consider the volume pf posts you have made (its easier to make a slip up if 100 post a day 1 million since acount created than on fresh accounts)
moderation also happens only on posts that are reported. (giving trolls a powerfull tool to get you banned)
by moderators that cannor read english and basicly only check post for flagged words not reading the context they are used in.
so good active users diseapear all after month long bans.
meanwhile trolls create one burner account after another.
posting the most outragious post and it takes 24h for suppprt to react with warnings and bans and get warnings first anyway.. they take over the forum..
no.
when I had a forum permban on this account a decade ago
I could not post in any of the steam forum topics same as an month long ban.
-
nor could I write reviews for games. or post guides.
I could not write on the accounts of friends.
oh and one cannot report other users while banned which is snoying if they abuse your ban to spam your account or mention you in forum posts in pure slander.
I could still post in game forums.
I could still add or remove friends.
I could still chat with friend.
I coulf still play my games
I could still use te marketplace.
the permban had no end date it just said you are permanently banned from all steam forums and wont be allowed to post anymore.
unlike month long or year long bans those do have an end date
I said it earlier, but the community ban is legit, she's not lying about that. You can go to her main account profile and see it's community banned, because of all the signs I mentioned in my other reply (no "Profile is private text" and mini-profile shows her level, private profiles are always 0).
Although I do think there's a good chance she doesn't tell the full story, in fact she usually is pretty vague about the ban reasons and has never shown any screenshots of the moderator message which should include the offending posts, which would give a lot of context to what's happening.
It was for random b.s. though because I had reported so many people that it pissed the mods off.
I don't report folks much anymore. I don't really care though. I would certainly not go through the process of making alts.
Edit;
I didn't know it was related to a specific user here. I'm not in the know though. I know calling out all the discrepancies will only get you trouble though. Probably shoukd let it die then
Support removed it, as a one-time courtesy.
