Too many games
Almost every profile I click to see what games they playing I observe one and the same thing. Just too many games in their libraries - 50, 80, 100 and 95% of the games are either never played it or has less than 1 hour.

So what is going on here ? I can think of only one reason for this absurdity. It must be the holiday discount sales when people just can't resist to buy a whole bunch of games with deep discounts like 70%-80% and they load up the carts. Just can't resist the temptation. Then next holiday season they repeat the same and the library grows and grows to 100 games either never played or less than an hour.

Good game is a fun game to play. The rest is not so fun.

I don't buy unnecessary game. I don't want to burn the air.

Clearly the OP is not a real gamer.

Some people people buy game keys on discount in off-site bundles, sometimes for less than what the standalone game would cost if they were purchased on steam, and then never play the ones they got on the side or just haven't gotten around to it yet.

And I thought I had too much games facepalm
When I complete a game, I like to have a selection to choose what to play next.

But I do have quite a few that I haven't played yet, so I won't be buying much for a while.

It was kinda recently we started to have refund policy here on steam, sure back then it was dirt cheap but if a game was so bad due to lack of controll (wich still exist for better or worse) you couldent just refund it if you dident like it or meet todays requirement.

"But I do have quite a few that I haven't played yet, so I won't be buying much for a while."

That's the rationality argument.

So we are pretty much on the same page why this is happening. It is the holiday seasons and the temptation to hoard.

Problem is a person doesn't have enough time to play all those games, and even if you say you will play them later guess what, by that time the game is morally old and unattractive

Private profiles don't get to bully others for amount of games, wonder how your stats look like.

Yeah this is a big factor right here. There'd be a humble bundle with 1 game that everyone wanted and 4 games they don't really care about.

sometimes you can get a game at -85% or lower and last year two warhammer games where given out for free

That is excellent to be able to refund morally old games that you bought and then realized it will be never played. But never will happen because Steam is notoriously greedy. But you may look it from another perspective, the flow of the money remains the same and Steam would not be bleeding money because the refund money will flow back to them in new purchases.

I've been buying games on Steam for 19 years. 385 games isn't a lot over that course of time.

You think 50 is 'too many'? You should probably avoid the profiles with 500-1000 games. :D

But yeah, I have a few I never bothered with, from Humble Bundles back in the day. Pay $10 for 10 games, 3 of which I actually wanted; things like that. Plus the 'free' games that came with GPU purchases, etc.
Still, I've only got ~150 games after 16 years on Steam. That's less than 10 a year.

Well, I certainly remember the old meme pics people would always post when the Steam sale was coming, of their wallets screaming in pain. :D

But honestly, it's been a long time since I actually bought a bunch of games during a sale. Because I know there'll be another one in a couple months, and I've got enough in my backlog to play until then. /shrug Didn't buy any games this past Winter & Autumn sales.

Still, though - 100 games isn't that many. Especially for people who've been in the hobby a long time. It's just math - even if you only got a game every other month, that's 6 a year. After 20 years, that's 120. Personally, I've been playing games since 1980 - between Apple II, Mac, PC, and PS1 thru PS4, I'm sure I've gotten several hundred games over those years.

edit: looking at my profile, I bought 6 games & 2 DLC in 2023. Only two of the games were full price/on release (Starfield & Station To Station). I also got Diablo 4 on Battle.net. And I played all of those.
