The romans did not use rectangular shields
You seen it on tv but the issue is they don't have the ability to interlock with another shield meaning that the traditional turtle formation never happened the way they showed you on tv.

The main reason is that if you look at the tv version you would end up with a hole where you can poke in as many spears you want.

It would been better to just use the shield to cover yourself instead of creating a window where anyone can throw in a spear.

This is why the romans didn't used rectangular shields in a turtle formation.

They used the testudo formation to protect against projectiles. Honestly not sure how often, but it's in their own accounts. The shields didn't have to "interlock". Don't know what TV show you watched.

um they needed to poke their spears out...
You can't hit anything this way
Yes, Romans did use rectangular shields in their testudo formation.

You know how hard it is to get a spear inside that tiny crack? Not saying it's impossible but you'll have to be very up close to throw it inside; whilst at the same time trying to avoid the roman's projectiles like slingers and javelin throwers.
The Vikings didn't have horns on their helmets.

How close didn't you think these battles were? They were stabbing each other with knives.

They had some other formations who the historians don't want to mention that the line formation was a spear formation where they would bear-trap their opponent.

On tv they stand in firing lines as if they had machine guns.

Then how do YOU know about them??????? You were there? You had dreams about being there? A random poster on YouTube said so?

You do realize that even up close they still stood side by side in a shield wall? Before engaging in close quarters combat the Romans would throw their Pilas at the enemy rendering their shields useless.

It’s a effective tactic that won them many battles.

That's how it works now. You can just stand firm and argue baseless points these days because the loudest person wins. We've practically been giving out trophies to those who think up random nonsense on their own and then share with everyone like it's facts.

Yes.

Ancestral blood memories.

From what i hear, real history is locked away in a private library that only few people have access to so i guess we'll never really know.
So stupid question how did a small band of Roman soldiers defeat Boudica's charging warriors numbering in there thousands if not hundreds of thousands?
The Roman army went thru many reformations, what era are you speaking about?
