Why do Unitedstatians appropriated the term "American"?
Just like an European is someone from the European continent, an American should be someone from the American Continent, even if you wrongly believe there are two American Continents(North and South) they already have claimed "North American" too, when Canada and Mexico are both in the northern hemisphere of the continent.

Agree. Everyone from Canada to Argentina is an "American". The USA should have been given a different name. Like Fred. The country called Fred. The USA also does not speak English. The people in England do. The USA speaks USian. There are differences.

Canadians and Mexicans allowed them to keep it. Like if your stinky friend borrows your favourite deodorant.

You say that we appropriated the term, as if people all over the world don’t also use the word “Americans” to describe people from the US. People all over Europe and Australia and other places call us Americans.

Why not tell all those people to stop referring to us as “Americans”? If the rest of the planet decides that we should be labeled this way, then who are we to say otherwise?

No one called the people in the new country that was formed Americans until after they named it the USA. The act of naming it USA was an appropriation. Like was said previously, If the UK had named itself the United Kindom of Europe, that would be just as bad.

Are people really so anti-American they'll complain about what Americans are called? As if it's a super important issue to worry about.

America was the name of the new world. Best yes having USA being finalized did help popularize the term of Americans. Also even though United Kingdom of Europe would sound strange to us, it is not technically wrong if the name existed. There would be only one united kingdom in europe in that scenario as there is currently only one united states in America.
United Arab Emirates is also a similar example of this naming scheme that does exist.
Oh and United Mexican States, which is the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ name of Mexico, but since USA beat them to the punch before all their revolutions and Mexico identifies more with Mexico than the term America, it wouldn't have worked out in owning the term American.

Brazilians actually do have a word in Portuguese that literally means 'United-Statians', I believe - but it is extremely formal. Doubt it is used in everyday speech.

Source, Wiki: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/estado-unidense
True, we also have estadunidense.

In day-to-day speech, we do say ♥♥♥♥♥♥ (which is sensored even though its *not* pejorative in any way) and americano.

Some people are more prone to using "estadunidense" (US-ian), and it also comes up when we're contrasting them to the rest of the people from America, in which we use "americanos" as a toponym for the continent.

So yeah, if you call us amerivanos or they americanos, everyone will know what you mean, as in the first case, from America, in the latter, from USA. In cases of ambiguity, its best to change the country toponym for something else.

Canadians and Americans are "North Americans", Mexico is part of "Central Americans" along with a host of other smaller countries and then you got "South Americans" that live entirely on the continent over there, plus little islands dotted around. then you have "Caribbeans" which includes all those small islands from Cuba all the way down to Trinidad and Tobago.

That's what the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ coverall is, but the thing is that Americans call themselves that nickname and so do those on the outside the country because it's just easier to identify with them the way you put it.

Given America is actually part of the name of the country, Americans is and will forever remain the proper term. It can be the name of a country, as well as the name of a continent, and it's not the only part of the world where this is the case. Don't get pissy just because you have a problem with Americans.

Or you are just not taking anything at all under consideration and is just holding on to a weak argument just to reaffirm yourself.

People don't "have a problem" with bullies, imperialists, and supremacists out of will, you know?

Lock down the US and liberate peoples everywhere from Capitalism. See who cares how US-ians call themselves in their own country.

You don't live in a freaking bubble - unfortunatelly.

Because it's the "United States of America"
We're really just a collection of states on the continent of North America that happen to have a central federal government that loosely (well it was supposed to be loosely) ties us together. We do have words for individuals from every state: Texan, California, Floridian, Georgian, Alaskan, New Yorker, Rhode Islander, etc etc.
But a lot of people may not know/care where RHode Island is, and it is a state in (North) America, therefore "American" broadly fits US citizens the best.
The America's consist of 2 continents North America, and South America. That would make them North Americans. Their country is the United States of America, hence Americans....... There is no continent know as America.

We have "étatsuniens", but it's ugly and too long, so we can call them "américains", but it's too long too, so we mostly call them just "ricains". Still ugly, but short enough to suit them better.
