Since the original Mickey Mouse is now public domain, what ya'll gonna do with him?
My take on it is pretty simple and straightforward...

Wait, what?

Did Disney forget to threaten not to pay their taxes or something?

All stuff gets into public domain after some time, you can't change it. Just like Winnie the pooh is under public domain too now.

Now I can't wait for mickey mouse bootlegs

Disney has been using their clout to push the definition of Public Domain for decades. Mickey Mouse was supposed to go PD in 1984, then after they bullied the gov't into redefining public domain, it was supposed to be 2004. Then after they bullied the gov't again, it became 2024.

It doesn't work that way. Epic Mickey is its own trademark that won't go public domain for a long time.

Its pathetic that Disney have lobbied and successfully violated Copyright laws just to keep him out of public domain.

He's not even relevant anymore. He stopped being relevant after 1953 for goodness sake. They tried to halfheartedly revive him in the 90s, only for 'Runaway Brain' to franchise-kill him once and for all.

I would put him in a steam boat with a nice jaunty musical piece of him dancing while steering.

Huey P Newton is still more relevant than anything Disney has put out.

The government stopped extending the copyright term a few years ago. Gov't generally has to extend the term before a copyright expires. We get new stuff every time the calendar year changes now, until the gov't decides to extend it again.

I remember reading somewhere that one of Disney's arguments was somewhere along the lines that the general public wouldn't care if the term was extended or not 'cause it's not like the average person could publish video very easily. In 2004 the internet was still kind of a novel thing, so it probably wasn't given serious consideration as a publication medium for the general public, esp. by the people in office at the time. The dinosaurs Disney might have bribed off might've also died by now too.

We won't get the most iconic version of Mickey until the Fred Moore design becomes public domain in another 10 or 11 years. We can't even draw him with his gloves until next year.

2024 prediction - The amount of that Mickey Mouse ™ character starring in "Steamboat Willy's Willy" pr0n is about to skyrocket.

I don't think so things do not become public domain if their owners pay to renew the licensing. If they decide to stop paying then happens what you say.

Disney always use Mickey Mouse as an icon but then they don't do anything with him it is the most underused character ever, expecially the original USA authors. In my Country who write local comics for Disney have created a lot of stories with Mickey Mouse but the original Dsney in America? Almost nothing. It is so weird
