Theoretically it is up to the states to decide the drinking age, however the Federal Government said they would withhold state funds if the state did not comply with it being 21. That is why in the late 90's the most states changed it to 21.

They just figure that the average kid graduates from high school and or goes to college close to the legal drinking age. By then, they are already almost full fledged alcoholics from chasing popularity so why not capitalize from them while they are still dumb about money. The weed business works in conjunction with the alcohol to do the same thing. Especially right now with how corrupt America has become with all of the botched politics and unfair treatment to the homeless by highly motivated law enforcement which makes it obvious who is selling it. I'm not saying anything new. Just repeating what Hollywood has been insinuating for the last hundred years. Being 18 just means that you now have the right to be as miserable as your slave parents. Usually by the age of 21, you are already there.

Not that I necessarily disagree with the rest but the drinking age hasn't been 21 for 100 years; after prohibition most made it 21 but by the 70's some had lowered it. After 18 y/o's got the vote a lot of States lowered the age, a couple increased it later on but in the early 80's the government put a lot of road funds behind drinking at 21 so by the end of the decade all States increased the age to 21, a couple territories held out for a while and I believe both PR and the Virgin Islands still have it at 18.

There actually is a medical reason behind this law. The human brain is not fully developed until approximately 25 years of age. It is slightly different for men and women, women having a fully developed brain before men.

Having the drinking age raised to 21 is the governments way of attempting to protect young people. Alcohol can and does cause temporary and in some cases permanent brain damage. This becomes far more prevalent in brains that are not fully developed.

I seriously doubt that is what the law makers were looking at when they raised the drinking age to 21. In point of fact, I know for a fact that they were not looking at that. But, medically it does make sense. It would be better if we could raise the drinking age to 26, but I have serious doubts that will ever happen.

Brain development continues until about age 25 or so and alcohol r3tards brain development. Look at society in Ireland if you want to see what widespread childhood alcohol consumption does.
