How many races are there?
Growing up many years ago in one part of the world I was basically taught that humans began in three places on Earth.
Getting jobs as a kid I would only see three options on applications. I just figured that is how it worked.

As a grew older and moved to the USA I started to see more and more added. Like Hispanic was a new option I never saw before I moved to Southern California.

I figure what people consider "race" seems to be very different depending on how/where/experience from being raised a certain way.

Over the years I have seen more and more added to the list of races along with "other".

Now it seems the list is shorter and has the more basic local options and "other".

So the question becomes ...

Just what do people in different places call a "race"?

I have even seen Puerto Rican as a race.
Do Chinese consider themselves a different race from Japanese? There are certainly different characteristics. Different from Korean?

Should we consider Irish a different race from Scottish? They also have distinct characteristics. Even classic Roman features are different from classic Greeks.

Where do we draw the line? Are we back to the original 3 or has race become like gender and anything goes?

I just don't know. What is considered "normal" today? Is this even taboo to ask about or am I insulting someone by asking?

ANSWER - Apparently races do not exist. There is only one Race <human> and many Nationalities. Any mention of physical difference is considered bad and racist.

Arab is Caucasian. Not really all that mixed eithet.
According to USA census data, yes. According to genetics and migration in the Middle East and North Africa, no.

According to DNA tests. Yes. Someone from Norway and someone from Saudi Arabia are genetically closer than someone from China and someone from Japan. The US classifies them as white. White is Caucasian, but not all Caucasians are what everyone would consider white. Indians are mostly Caucasian too.

There are different cultures and nationalities and old people might call "asian" - "black" - "etc." - Races yo but one should maybe not use those terms no more or use them carefully or in a debate or something idk

i think there is a line between racism and dark comedy like

saying: u can be scared of black people but can't be serious about black people should sit in the back of a classroom or something

not okay ! black people are also people and asians and it would be crazy if there was like mixed nationalities riot or something
Why does it matter so much to you is the real question.

To delineate, itemize, and enumerate, you need to first create a system of metrics for generating those categories. Regardless, we're not all the same. There is truth to the idea that there are all types within all peoples, but not in a sense that logically supports "therefore all peoples at scale are essentially the same".

I´m unsure who said this. But there´s the human species, which is biological. Then the nationality would be something unimportant, as it would be completely artificial. And ethnicities would be about culture - and would also include these physical differences.

Races do exist in race theory, which is about racism. Also the English languages says human race more often than it would use human species, while here there wouldn´t be an addition for it, and it´s either human, or humanity. And instead of saying Asian race we would say Asians for example. And i personally don´t think it´s much different in English either, as i can´t imagine anyone referring himself as part of some race. Like "white man race", or "black people race" - i mean why to add this? Or does this exist in Your daily vocabulary?

And if it´s about ethnicities - it´s far too many to list i guess, and probably differs depending on the source.

Ultimately, there could be as many races as there are people. Because there is no person immune to racism in one form or another. There's no such thing as 'your own people'. sometimes even within a family.

This depends on genetics and their interplay with environment, which biases certain traits and susceptibilities. This includes organizational characteristics and transgenerational information uptake.

Because I got banned for asking a question the wrong way and I am still trying to sort out why and figure out what I should say to not get banned again.

Refer to the ending of 1984 for your answer.

You could not ask about race and hot topic issues. That would ensure you not get banned.
Ulfrinn 21 DIC 2023 a las 10:46 a. m.
Also, noticing there are different races and physical differences isn't outdated, or racist. It's biologically sound science. What you do with that information is what makes a difference. People saying otherwise are just looking for something to virtue signal about so they can pretend they did something important and pat themselves on the back.

Well it wasn't really a hot topic. I was just wanting to know what others think.

Should I be afraid to ask what people were taught in school? Is that offensive?

Would be nice if you were to say the least.

Virtue signaling types are often the most bigoted and prejudiced of all. As you implied, I think the whole matter revolves around a conditioned set of reflexes tied to the word "Racism" itself. Over time it shifted from the mere existence of races, and then was conflated with prejudice. From prejudice it was further conflated to hate. And from hate you can pluck on all those negative emotions. So gradual redefinition of a word is what "one race, human race, we're all the same and that's why we celebrate our differences" split minded thinking was built on. A lot of media programming, pathos, and redefinition of some key terms.
