There are ways to offer new content without making it time limited, permanently missable. It's not nearly as bad if the battlepass only offers cosmetics items but of course not all games do this, some of them do have gameplay items, in-game currencies, etc. in their passes.
No, I think it's a huge problem in the industry. I'd be glad to see the death of battlepasses.
I like battlepasses.
What I don't like is the ones that expire and don't let you ever have any means of unlocking the items from them.
I also don't like battlepasses that you can put hours and hours in to unlock stuff from it, then later on everything gets outright sold for a measly $2. Looking at you, Gears 5.
All they have to do is just bring it back with a challenge that would equal the amount of time people have spent on it when it first released...
It depends on how it's offered.
It's only a way for the dev/publisher to make more money, so don't think they're doing anything nice for you if they offer you a "Battlepass."
Any "Battlepass" that has a significant cost associated with it should tell the player that they shouldn't have bought that game. But, it's too late, so the only recourse is to not buy games from that developer/publisher and to stop playing that game. Fat chance that'll happen, tho...
Yeah everything but cosmetics should be unlockable thru grinding imo.
Subscriptions are extremely overpriced and greedy. It's selling the same game over and over and secretly overpricing the game to hundreds or thousands.
Imagine trying to sell one game at $1500, people will jump and said no. but selling it at $30 battle pass every 2 months for 5 years, you sell a $1800 game and people are willing to buy.
