They're called white and black colors but not in the sense of existence or nonexistence.

People always say this, but they never explain what it means.

It's one of those things "everyone knows" because some other kid on the playground sprung a trick riddle on them.

Two jackets (for instance) of the same brand, style and size, could vary only by one being blue and the other black, and they would be easily distinguishable. Yet the only difference would be the wavelengths of light that are absorbed and reflected. That sounds like an open and shut case of color to me.

This is straight from Adobe

"And many do consider black to be a colour, because you combine other pigments to create it on paper. But in a technical sense, black and white are not colours, they're shades. They augment colours."

I don't consider adobe the authority on color, or even competent at making software, and besides, they still didn't answer the question. Unless they think "augmenting colors" is something red, green or purple don't do.

Literally everyone on the planet recognizes white and black as colors, when they're normally talking about colors and not looking at white & black in some technical term

Clothing stores, paint stores, furniture stores, every single kind of store

Probably the best argument. Nobody is going to see anything wrong with "The color of my shirt is black (or white)". They are colors for all intents and purposes. Not textures, or sizes, or forms, or anything else. Colors.
