Yes, it's also against various national laws and UNCLOS.
Yes, you'll get banned for talking about it.

There are plenty of free games, no excuse anymore. Not worth it.

I have been banned for years on steam (permban without any warnings)

just for stating in a debate about pircacy on another part of the forum regarding drm.. in the early days of steam.

adding drm makes me more likely to pirate, not less.
"admitting to pircacy is reason for a permban"

I could debate all I wanted "I not admitted I merely stated probability as a general statement"
but they stated in support "discussing piracty AT ALL is an instand perban.. we have zero tolerance on that"

that 2 moderators started that topic.. and were not permbanned even though indeed the rules did state no talking bout piracy at all at that time.. was clear "double standard" of the time..

I took years before steam allowed a bit more freedom on this topic and therefor undid this ban.

=====================

these days steam seems to allow conversations about the ethics of piracy and only ban people who actively provide tools or tips on how to pirate..

morally I feel piracy never was a problem..it never wes,.. it was a false term cointed by the likes of metallica originally mega wealthy artists.. it was of no consequence to most.

in fact piracy serves as a boost.. research shows that pc gamers who download pirated games on a regulair basis, increase their yearly spending on games vastly.. often spending 400 euro a year where without piracy they only did spend 70-90 euro a year.

-> the industry falsely sees each pirated copy as a lost sale.. but thats false framing.. a person that does not pirate a game.. will not automaticly buy it instead.

what further reasearch did show was that on top of spending vastly more on games if you allow people to pirate, does alter spending behavior..
-> products that are proportionally high priced (above market standard ) like predatory amounts of dlc, are often delayed in purchase till price drops.. as such "milking out a title" will be less effectice

-> products that are heavy reliant of a short hype, or heavy advertising, but have many shortcomings, will see people not buying those, or only until after the bugs are ironed out.

piracy also spreads out the spending more.. as it allows to test out more things, people better find out what they like and they tend to spread their money out over far more different genres studio's etc.

as such piracy serves as a method to force the industry to charge fair prices and deliver decent quality..

->

piracy is GOOD for the gaming industry.

but who opposes it? slaveholders.

it is alike the days of slavery.
-> a cottonfarm run by a 1 slaveholder and has 999 slaves can only output 90 thousand a year.. but ALL that output ends in HIS pocket,

-> when that land is split into 1000 small farms owned by each.. the output collective rises to 400 thousand.. or 400 each.. which for 999 of them is a vast increase, for the industry as a whole is an incerease.. but for slaveholder he sees his revenue drop from 90k to 400,

the ones who complain about piracy and say we need drm are those slaveholders..
they damage the industry as a whole just so THEY can stay on top.

----------------------
+ drm is bookburning..

in these days where games are only spread by steam.. and steam drops support for old OS, + if it is removed from the steam store there is NO way to purchase it 2d hand anywhere..
piracy is also the ONLY way to preserve pieces of art that otherwise would be lost forever..

even if you "own" a game on steam.. you will want to download a pirated copy too.. so that when it stops working one day.. the pirated one still does

so it even is MORAL to pirate..
--------------------------------------
the real evil is the DRM.

it IS immoral to add drm like steam to games, stripping users of rights like 2d hand sales and not haaving their games be made obsolete due os support drops.

if piracy was such an issue.. why are console games still sold on fysical disks that can just as easy be pirated as pc games of old?

and it is totally possible with the tech of the year 2000 let alone now.. to make an usb stick that is fully protected against tampering.. no install needed..
that would be a far user friendlier drm measure.. to return "copy bound to holder" than this steam crap.

It's a literal CRIME. It breaks every TOS.
